Couture, Machado, Inosanto to Appear in Big-Budget Movie

HOLLYWOOD—Ultimate Fighting Championship legend Randy Couture, Brazilian-jujutsu master John Machado (See John Machado behind the scenes by clicking here!) and jeet kune do authority Dan Inosanto are among the martial artists who will appear in Redbelt, the latest project to come from award-winning writer and director David Mamet. Sony Pictures Classics began production of the movie, which stars Tim Allen (Home Improvement, The Santa Clause), in May 2007 for a 2008 release. The $10 million action flick signals Mamet’s return to indie films from his producer/director/writer work for the CBS spec-ops series The Unit.

Mamet’s original screenplay chronicles the experiences of a jujutsu master who’s left competitive fighting to lead a quiet life of honor and operate a dojo in West Los Angeles. The twist occurs when he’s forced to fight again. Redbelt is being described as an American samurai film that inhabits an underworld of bouncers, cage fighters, cops and special-forces operatives—in other words, not a far cry from Mamet’s usual territory, except with more fighting.

The film’s co-star is Chiwetel Ejiofor, 32, an accomplished actor whose placid, honorable expression and previous dramatic work (Serenity, Children of Men, Amistad) make him ideal for the role of the jujutsu master. Mixed-martial artist Enson Inoue and boxer Ray Mancini have supporting roles.
