Born on August 16, 1940, Larry Hartsell began his martial arts training in 1961 with Ed Parker, from whom he earned a black belt in kenpo karate. In 1967, he began training with Bruce Lee after earning a black belt in judo.

Upon returning from service in the U.S. Army as a military police officer in Vietnam, Hartsell resumed training with Lee at his Bel Air home and at his school under senior instructor Dan Inosanto. Hartsell would train with Inosanto for 35 years.

Hartsell's research of techniques resulted in additions and innovations to the grappling that now forms the core of the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling Arts system.

Author and co-author on several books on jeet kune do, Hartsell also released several videos on grappling and the combative arts. He was featured in numerous articles for a variety of martial arts magazines including Black Belt, Martial Arts Training, Inside Kung Fu and Australasian Fighting Arts.

Sadly, Larry Hartsell passed away on August 20, 2007.
