Chi Kung Exercises

Literally translated, chi kung means “the working of air” and is a series of breathing techniques that can be done standing or lying down. Chi kung (also Romanized as qigong) generates, strengthens and increases the flow of one’s chi (qi) levels. In traditional Chinese medicine, chi is one’s “life force” or “life energy.” Chi is the foundation of Eastern medicine and has been used as a healing tool for more than 2,000 years.

There are many different kinds of chi kung exercises. The first physical evidence of chi kung practice was found on a Chinese Neolithic pot dating back to 3000 to 5000 B.C. It depicts a person practicing the “post” or “hugging the tree stance,” which is one of the foundations for practicing tai chi (taiji) and iron palm. Chi kung is not a system of meditation and must be practiced with the eyes open and the mouth closed. Performing chi kung exercises can cure illnesses, enhance vitality, increase mental and physical performance, promote youthfulness and aid in spiritual advancement.
