William Cheung

Born one month before Bruce Lee in 1940, the Hong Kong-raised William Cheung (Cantonese: Cheung Cheuk-hing) began training in wing chun kung fu under Ip Man in 1951. As is historically common in the Chinese kung fu student-teacher relationship, William Cheung was Ip Man’s live-in student between 1954 and1958. During that time, William Cheung inherited the complete teachings of traditional wing chun kung fu. During this time, William Cheung introduced Bruce Lee to Ip Man. According to some accounts, Bruce Lee and Ip Man became good friends, but there’s always disagreement about these kind of lineage and relationship stories.

William Cheung moved to Australia to teach wing chun in 1973. By 1976, he was elected the president of the Australian Kung Fu Federation. From 1978 to 1980, William Cheung served as chief instructor to the U.S. 7th Fleet based in Yokosuka, Japan, where he taught marines hand-to-hand close-quarters combat. In 1983, William Cheung was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame as the Kung Fu Artist of the Year. Since then, William Cheung has devoted his life to teaching traditional wing chun and spreading the art through his books and international seminars.
