Judo Videos

Derived from his study of jujutsu, Jigoro Kano created judo as a martial sport usable for self-defense. In 1882, Jigoro Kano founded the Kodokan Judo Institute as judo’s governing body. Judo became an Olympic sport at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Today, the spirit and honor of Jigoro Kano’s beloved art lies with Hayward Nishioka, who was the Black Belt Hall of Fame’s 1977 Judo Instructor of the Year. Hayward Nishioka, who garnered fame at the aforementioned Kodokan Judo Institute in Japan, teaches proper breakfalls, judo’s primary throws, chokes, armbars, pins, holds, throws and counters in a series of videos and DVDs. Hayward Nishioka also speaks about his latest book, Training for Competition: Judo, in an exclusive behind-the-scenes video.

Rounding out this collection is a series of videos by Gary Goltz, chief operating officer of the U.S. Judo Association, who demonstrates extreme judo chokes, comments on Hayward Nishioka and Black Belt magazine, and reflects on his life as a judoka and instructor.
