Get inside the tactical mind of Target Focus Training founder Tim Larkin as he explains why the brain is your biggest weapon when it comes to defending yourself — even against an armed attacker!

“[Target Focus Training deals primarily with] asocial violence,” says Tim Larkin, the Black Belt Hall of Fame Self-Defense Instructor of the Year. “[Asocial violence] refers to those rare instances in which you need to respond with violence; if you don’t, you’re essentially participating in your own murder.” And thus begins another lesson in how to defend yourself from an attacker from the recently controversial Tim Larkin, founder of the fighting system known as Target Focus Training.

In this exclusive video, this expert in the instruction of self-defense moves delves into how to defend yourself against an attacker wielding a knife using close-range fighting techniques to your tactical advantage.

Tim Larkin Shows You How to Defend Yourself Against an Attacker Carrying a Knife

How Tim Larkin’s Target Focus Training Addresses the Use-of-Force Continuum

“We’ve got tons and tons of video of [military and law-enforcement] officers doing exactly what they’re trained to do,” Tim Larkin says. “Exactly what they’re trained to do is go for their tool base — and rightfully so. Oftentimes, they’ll be working their way up the force continuum. They’ll try to get distance. They’re going to get to their pepper spray first. [If] that doesn’t work, they’ll try to get to their baton.

“If they can’t [get the baton], though, they’ll pull out the firearm — and all done at [very close range], [so] there’s all sorts of other things that could control the situation as fast as the tool.”

Tim Larkin on How Target Focus Training Aims to Turn the Human Body Into a Weapon

“We teach people to do the work of a firearm, meaning we want to learn how to do [ the work of a bullet] with our human body,” Tim Larkin says. “We want to destroy tissue, we want to break things on the human body that we can break. [We want to replicate the forces] of humans colliding with each other or humans colliding with the planet. I don’t need a tool in order to do that — especially this close.

“Sometimes the worst thing I can do with [an attacker] is go to get distance. He may have a knife I don’t even know about yet. All of a sudden, I realize this is ‘on,’ and [when I go] to get distance, [it] gives him plenty of room [to stab me].”

Tim Larkin, standing toe-to-toe with his attacker, moves away about a foot. This opens up room for his training partner to simulate a stab with his training knife. Such a situation is exactly what might happen as a civilian or even a military or law-enforcement officer tries to create space to draw a weapon that is higher up the use-of-force continuum ladder. Instead of using one’s arm to push oneself away from the attacker (or push the attacker away from him), Tim Larkin recommends pushing a strike with one’s forearm into the attacker’s throat. This not only creates space but also injures the attacker at one of his vital points, setting up an extra split second for appropriate deployment of your own knife or even a firearm.

How to Defend Yourself Against an Attacker at Close Range Using Target Focus Training Tactics

“Everything I want is [at close range],” Tim Larkin says. “I’ve got top of the foot. I can bust his ear if I wanted to. I can break his ankle. It’s all right there as long as I know what I’m doing. If I think [a gun I'm carrying] is the weapon, I’m screwed. The only weapon you have is your brain. Everything else is a tool. I don’t need this to be effective. If I pull this weapon and I drop it, I [can still attack with my hands].

“Guys who survive violence are guys who think [along these lines]. And that’s all we’re trying to show people: This is how you train in a low-stress way so it’s there for you when you need it. And then you up the stress levels. When we [train], we’ll do every sort of distraction there is. But I won’t do that until you’ve got your basic strikes keyed in and you know where to put [them]. It’s useless for me to stress you out if you don’t know what to do. It’ll just cause chaos and fear.”

Things to Remember

Bram Frank recommends keeping these concepts in mind as part of your training in knife-fighting techniques:

One of the most important teachings of the Filipino martial arts is “defanging the snake.” Also known as attacking your opponent’s weapon hand, it’s designed to destroy his ability to hold his knife.

When you use knife-fighting techniques to attack your opponent’s weapon hand, you eliminate the threat posed by the weapon. It’s relatively simple to do — fingers are easily damaged.

Often, the opponent’s hand is the easiest part of his body to reach during knife-fighting techniques. After all, when he’s holding a knife, chances are he’s extending it toward you.

In a life-or-death struggle, it’s a perfectly valid strategy to cut the inside of the adversary’s arms. In fact, it’s the most effective cut you can do during knife-fighting techniques. Eliminate the flexors, and your opponent has no ability to hold anything — including a weapon.

To guarantee the effectiveness of a cut to the outside of the arm, slice up to the biceps or down to the thumb.

Adhesion makes cutting effective. Cut and stick to the cut. Steel seeks flesh.

Lead with the edge of your weapon; thrust and rip with the tip. Keep the edge on the opponent.

Train to get to your weapon faster with this FREE Guide!
Knife-Fighting Techniques: 9 Essential Drills to Deploy Tactical Folders for Self-Defense Moves Under Any Conditions

Disengage by cutting through the enemy. Retreat with your body, not with your steel.

Strive to eliminate your adversary’s mobility. If you hamper his ability to maneuver, you remove the danger.

Aim once, cut twice. Now cut again. Cut one more time just to be safe.

Shoulders, especially the deltoid muscles, make easy targets. No deltoid means no arm mobility.

If the opponent’s blade is high, your blade is high. If his blade is low, your blade is low. In jeet kune do, it’s the intercepting fist; in knife fighting, it’s the intercepting blade.

Stabbing is for screwdrivers, shanks and ice picks. Knives are for cutting and thrusting.

Cutting takes no strength. Always cut with fluidity and intent. The longer the edge is in contact, the deeper the cut.

If your body is out of reach for your opponent, his weapon hand may be in range for you. Cut it.

Knife combat (or any form of edged-weapons combat, for that matter) is never the same twice. To maximize your chance of prevailing, hone your attributes (the skills you need for self-defense), your footwork (how you position and move your feet and legs), your timing (how you react within the motion of combat, using the full beat and half-beat), your concept of distance and range (gauging how far away your opponent is and determining which tools and techniques are best for that range) and defanging the snake.

The preferred way to develop all those attributes and abilities is to spar. Sparring with training weapons is the best way to safely practice combat.

Each sparring session should be 95-percent soft and 5-percent hard. If you go hard all the time, your attempts at attribute development will fade into chaos. Gross-motor skills will prevail, and fine-motor skills will be lost. In contrast, soft sparring locks in the fine-motor skills you need so they can be used in the 5 percent of your sparring that’s considered hard.

With more than 30 years of martial arts and H2HC experience, Michael Janich is widely recognized as one of America’s top knife-fighting experts, authorities on edged-weapon design and instructors of self-defense moves. Michael Janich was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame as the 2010 Weapons Instructor of the Year.

“One of the toughest things you’re going to run into is going empty-hand against a knife,” knife-fighting and H2HC expert Michael Janich says. “It’s one of the scariest situations you can possibly imagine. And of the different situations you could be in, one of the most committed attacks and one of the most common attacks is [an attacker] thrusting straight at [you].

H2HC Video
Michael Janich Shows You Self-Defense Moves to Counter a Knife Attack

“Typically, when this is done, a lot of times you’ll see martial arts people thrust and just kinda hang out there and wait for you to do a technique. When people do it for real, they’ll do what’s called ‘bulldogging.’ Or you’ll see ‘prison style,’ which is essentially getting [their] hands up into [your] eyes and just working the knife hard [in fast thrusts].”

Michael Janich’s H2HC Reality Check #1: You May Get Only One Shot at Using Self-Defense Moves Against a Knife Attack

In a prison-style “shanking,” military H2HC situation or a vicious street attack where the opponent’s goal is simply to kill you, you will have only one shot to block the initial knife thrust using self-defense moves.

“[You may] block it once if you get lucky,” H2HC instructor Michael Janich says. “The idea that you’ll [block] it more than once typically doesn’t work very well.”

Michael Janich’s H2HC Reality Check #2: The First of Your Self-Defense Moves Could Mean Life or Death

An attacker’s first thrust will either hit, miss or be avoided due to anticipation and countermeasures. The first two outcome options depend on the attacker’s accuracy. The third outcome option depends on your H2HC awareness and the speed of your self-defense moves.

“When he thrusts, I’ve got to stay alive through the first motion,” Michael Janich explains. “So [I hollow] out, [draw] my hips back and [drive] both arms forward, blocking the backs of both arms.

“My next motion is to immediately hook the back of his arm. Even if he tries to pull [away], I’ve got good control over his arm because I’ve limited his mobility to one joint.

“My next motion is to pull both arms into my chest. What we do is [get an armbar] and everything is locked up. Once I’ve gotten him to here, I’ve got good solid control.”

Michael Janich’s H2HC Reality Check #3: Follow-Through Is Essential

Once an attacker’s initial thrust has been handled through self-defense moves involving redirection and mobility restriction, there will be the question of what to do with the attacker. If you’re alone with him, Michael Janich suggests continued self-protection and follow-through using H2HC techniques.

“If I’m a civilian, I step back to protect my groin so I don’t get punched [there],” Michael Janich says. “If he posts [his non-weapon] hand, I step on the fingers and start driving my knee into his head.” (Watch the video for more follow-through options!)

Tim Larkin, Black Belt’s 2011 Self-Defense Instructor of the Year, knows how to get people’s attention.

One of his favorite ways is to rattle off a statement that just happens to form the nucleus of Target Focus Training, the fighting system he founded: “Violence is rarely the answer — but when it is, it’s the only answer.”

Intrigued? We were, too. That’s why Tim Larkin and his Target Focus Training system were featured on the cover of our February 2012 issue.

In fact, response to Tim Larkin’s cover article was such that we decided to feature him in our upcoming June 2012 issue (which ships to the printer this week with another Black Belt Hall of Fame member — Julius Melegrito, the 2011 Weapons Instructor of the Year — on the cover) to teach readers how to master deadly self-defense techniques without killing their partners.

Tim Larkin on How to Defend Yourself Against an Attacker by Training for Opportunity Exploitation

For Tim Larkin, the name of the game in Target Focus Training is recognizing opportunity and turning it into an injury. “An injury, as we define it,” Tim Larkin says, “is breaking something on the human body — either a sensory system or a structure — so that part of the body no longer functions during the time you’re involved with that person.”

In other words, Tim Larkin wants you to learn how to hurt “them” so they can’t hurt you anymore. He wants you to “put [them] into a nonfunctional state.”

“['Nonfunctional' means an attacker] is injured to the point where you can turn your back on him and he’s no longer a threat, or he’s unconscious or dead,” Tim Larkin explains. “Only then can you disengage. If he’s not in one of those states and you turn to get away and he pulls a gun — maybe you thought he just had a knife — you’re dead. Making sure he’s in a nonfunctional state is the only way to guarantee your safety.”

In the video above, Tim Larkin talks about the methodology he developed for target selection through opportunity. Each strike you unleash against an attacker has the potential to cause damage.

When deployed correctly and effectively, a strike elicits an immediate reaction — a cringe, a collapse … some sort of alteration in trajectory and/or stance that opens up vital targets for a follow-up strike.

That strike then causes a reaction, which opens the body to another strike.

“We’ll do like eight to 10 strikes,” Tim Larkin explains. “Often times, people will ask, ‘What the hell are you doing? The second strike would’ve taken care of the guy.’ We assume you’re going to miss under stress.”

When asked about technique sequences in martial arts magazines like Black Belt, Tim Larkin says, “We assume that [the photos shown] are the success points. There may have been eight, 10 strikes back and forth. But you recognized that one [vital] area of the human body, you got right in and you blasted it. And now everything’s changed in your favor [because now your opponent's] in trauma. He can’t respond anymore at this point.”

Leon Wright was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame as its 2010 Self-Defense Instructor of the Year. This was not a lightly granted honor for the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) expert, as his martial arts credentials and expertise in the field of self-defense moves are impressive.

With more than 40 years of experience in a range of Asian fighting styles, Leon Wright is a 10th-degree black belt in and the founder of souseiki ryu sekkinsen shigaisen, an art that is formally recognized in Okinawa and Japan, as well as the United States.

Leon Wright’s post-U.S. Marine Corps life has been spent serving the United States’ men and women in uniform, overseeing daily operations of numerous coalition forward operating bases in Afghanistan. It’s during this work that he volunteers his free time to teach the self-defense moves of souseki ryu to a growing group of students.

In addition to that already impressive roster, Leon Wright is a fifth-degree black belt in MCMAP — a rank one step higher than the maximum fourth degree normally available to gunnery sergeants. Additionally, Leon Wright is a certified MCMAP subject-matter expert, authorizing him to teach the MCMAP program as a civilian.

While the name of Leon Wright’s martial art — souseiki ryu sekkinsen shigaisen — may seem complicated, it’s actually based on simplicity, efficiency and realism. Souseki refers to “time of creation,” ryu to “school” or “way,” sekkinsen to “close combat” or “infighting,” and shigaisen to “street fighting.”

According to MCMAP instructor Leon Wright’s website, souseki ryu is a “non-classical, American martial art focusing on self-defense and realistic street situational training” technically derived from a variety of martial arts disciplines, including the following:

kung fu

jujitsu

shotokan karate

judo

In the above video depicting self-defense moves from Leon Wright’s extensive training in a variety of styles — including MCMAP techniques — the Black Belt Hall of Fame member shows you, the viewer, how to defend yourself against a roundhouse punch.

In the video, Leon Wright assumes the ready posture in front of his opponent. When the opponent throws a roundhouse punch (or, as Leon Wright calls it, a “haymaker”), the MCMAP instructor executes a high elbow block, then steps into the opponent’s personal space to deliver an elbow strike to the jaw.

Next up in his sequence of self-defense moves is the application of pressure to the knee to get the opponent off-balance. The MCMAP and karate expert then overhooks the man’s left arm just above the triceps before sweeping the leg in question. Still holding the opponent’s arm, Leon Wright executes a standing armbar while drilling his knee into the opponent’s ribs.

If this sequence of self-defense moves has not finished the attacker, the MCMAP instructor has a couple of finishing moves at his disposal. If he’s armed, the MCMAP techniques expert can put a knife to the attacker’s throat. If empty-handed, he can apply choke pressure or fire a straight punch to the opponent’s face.

According to Tim Larkin, Black Belt’s 2011 Self-Defense Instructor of the Year, “Violence is rarely the answer, but when it is, it’s the only answer.” This idea is fundamental to the self-defense technique training paradigm of his fighting system, Target Focus Training — a system that can improve your street-survival readiness.

“It all comes down to one question,” Tim Larkin says. “When do you have to take action on the street?”

Target Focus Training contains a set of principles and self-defense technique responses to situations that, as Tim Larkin explained in a recent Black Belt article on street-fighting tips, “help you make better decisions about how to use violence. … We believe that if you truly feel threatened, you can’t afford to use any fighting method that doesn’t produce an injury.”

MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING VIDEOS
Tim Larkin Teaches Street-Fighting Tips Incorporating Bodyweight in Self-Defense Techniques

For this installment in Black Belt’s ongoing series of martial arts training videos, Tim Larkin offers street-fighting tips using bodyweight as a means to stop an attacker before he can inflict injury on you. In the first segment of this martial arts training video, the attacker is on the ground on all fours, opening up some vital points for execution of a self-defense technique.

“What we do [in Target Focus Training],” Tim Larkin explains, “is train from all different angles. Say we’re learning the ring of the neck — we’re learning to strike the back of the neck, the side of the neck and the throat. This [position] is one of the profiles we put people in.”

As his self-defense technique demonstration partner assumes a position on all-fours, Tim Larkin readily acknowledges, “A lot of people go, ‘Whoa! Why would I ever kick a guy on the ground like this? This is really bad. So what I do is, I put them in there and I’ll sit there and say, ‘OK, you gotta step close, you gotta use your shin, you’re gonna come in, you’re gonna kick him to the throat and you’re gonna come right out and then you’re gonna follow him up.’”

Tim Larkin’s physical demonstration of his theoretical explanation depicts a key concept in Target Focus Training’s street-fighting tips arsenal: the delivery of one’s bodyweight to one of your opponent’s vital points, resulting in an injury that renders the opponent nonfunctional. A standard neck strike of this nature would often include an immediate leg retraction following the shin kick, but Tim Larkin’s version of the self-defense technique capitalizes on the shin kick’s inherent momentum by plowing the leg forward until his body has moved past the target’s original location.

“[And people say], ‘Why would you ever do that?’ [To explain, I do] the same scenario again,” Tim Larkin says. “[This time], he’s reaching for [a] gun. Most people would jump and wrestle with the gun at that point. What I’m trying to get my people to do is [realize that his brain] is what makes this guy dangerous.”

The Target Focus Training approach to such self-defense techniques opens the palette of vital targets from the standard go-to options of eyes, throat and groin, inviting the exploitation of other zones such as, in this case, the neck. “The reason [a lot of arts tend to be obsessed with striking the eyes, throat and groin] is those three targets don’t require bodyweight to injure. Instructors do that with female students all the time, and it’s a huge disservice. You don’t ever want to limit anybody by saying, ‘Here’s the top three.’”

The second half of this street-fighting tips video shows a scenario in which the ground opponent is moving toward a gun. In Tim Larkin’s self-defense technique training, he teaches the defender to use his bodyweight to strike parts of the body to inflict injury rather than just pain to make the opponent physically unable to continue posing a threat. “Pain is too much of a variable for us,” Tim Larkin says. “What we strive for [in Target Focus Training] is injury. We want a radiologist to look at the X-ray and say, ‘I don’t care what this guy is feeling; that part of the body isn’t going to work anymore.’”

As a setup in this particular martial arts training-video scenario, the threat is not necessarily the gun but whether the attacker obtains the gun. Therefore, Tim Larkin’s street-fighting tips encourage the objective of injury infliction sufficient to take the opponent’s progress out of commission. In this case, a shin kick to the throat temporarily takes out the opponent’s breathing apparatus, shocks an area near his head and disrupts his progress toward the gun.

In Tim Larkin’s execution of this self-defense technique with full-bodyweight application, the opponent is literally taken off course and moved out of the threat zone — and thus away from the likelihood of achieving his true threat potential. “[The gun] is useless to him if he hasn’t got it yet,” Tim Larkin explains. “So here it’s better to use my time to injure him. [By doing so], all the threats go away. Everything on him goes away at this point. [The gun's] useless to him and all his body parts are useless to him.”

Eyal Yanilov and his krav maga defenses against variations of the front kick were featured as the cover story for the March 2011 issue of Black Belt (which happened to be the third of five special 50th Anniversary issues leading up to the June 2011 50th Anniversary Collector’s Issue, all of which are available in our online store). In this exclusive martial arts video, the krav maga expert shows you how to defend against a knife attack from the ground position.

KRAV MAGA TECHNIQUE VIDEO
Eyal Yanilov Shows You How to Defend Against a Knife Attack on the Ground

In this krav maga video, Yanilov is on his back on the ground and an attacker sits atop him, thrusting a knife. Yanilov blocks the downward knife attack, explaining, “At the same time [as we block], we are counterattacking,” as he thrusts a tiger-claw-style eye gouge into the assailant’s face.

“The attacker is usually recoiling,” Yanilov continues. “I don’t let him. … When I recoil, I use my hips to throw him to the side and continue to attack.” Yanilov demonstrates this hip action and counterattack by rolling the attacker onto his back and getting his fist right up into his face. He grabs the attacker’s knife arm and pins it on the ground, immobilizing the attacker’s weapon and supporting his own bodyweight in the process. Yanilov gets up on one knee and one foot to secure his ability to move quickly from the danger zone while still maintaining enough leverage to control the situation.

MORE KRAV MAGA!

“The hook is being turned to grab with pressing on [the attacker's] arm so it will be difficult for him to move the arm,” Yanilov explains. “All this time, you continue to strike. At this moment, you can choose to get away from the danger zone [or] disarm and get out.” The krav maga master then demonstrates how to get out of the situation, grabbing the opponent’s leg and flipping it swiftly to one side to open his own escape route. “The last thing you do [in this particular example],” Yanilov says, “is leave the knife and move away.”

One of the most respected krav maga practitioners in the world today, Eyal Yanilov is currently listed as “master level 3/expert level 8″ in krav maga. This is the highest rank krav maga founder Imi Lichtenfeld ever awarded to any student. In 2010, Yanilov founded Krav Maga Global and serves as its chief instructor in a continued effort to spread real krav maga worldwide.

You’re out for a walk in the city at night and a man approaches you. Before you know it, he comes at you for a knife attack. What do you do? In a martial arts magazine, self-defense experts could suggest a variety of counterattacks — some from the traditional martial arts arena, some from the modern martial arts such as krav maga, and others from the reality-based self-defense world of combatives and the like.

The common element, though, would be a picture-perfect execution. “Assailants” attack when the self-defense instructor tells them to, the photographer directs the angle, and there would probably be the opportunity for a second take — not to mention the in-studio snacks and option for lunch when the shoot wraps.

But what does a not-so-picture-perfect knife-attack scenario look like? Combat Focus Shooting expert Rob Pincus talks about that in his latest video, shot exclusively for blackbeltmag.com:

CLOSE-QUARTERS COMBAT VIDEO
Rob Pincus Discusses Self-Defense Against a Knife Attack Under Pressure in a Dynamic Situation

Armed with a training gun, Pincus reacts to the approach of his assailant calmly in an attempt to diffuse the potentially lethal situation. As the attack situation escalates, so does the volume of Pincus’ voice as he urges the assailant to “Stop!” and “Stay back!” as they clash in a flurry of advances, retreats, twists and turns. Pincus deflects the attacker’s knife arm outward so as to keep it extended and away from his own torso’s vital organs. This hyperextension throws the attacker slightly off-balance.

While he attempts to regain ground so as to get his knife hand back into the game, Pincus sneaks his right arm under the opponent’s left shoulder and forces that left arm up and over to (a) keep the attacker’s left hand away from the firearm stowed on his belt and (b) open up the attacker’s own vital-organ section and get him into position for the most effective usage of said firearm.

It’s a loud, messy scene. The combatants are all over the place. There is no “take two.” These guys are playing for keeps, and it’s not very photo-friendly. “You can see that in a dynamic environment,” Pincus explains, “it’s much harder to actually make all that look perfect.”

Pincus continues: “And as we know, with any complex motor skills, when you do them at speed and under pressure, they’re going to look sloppy. … The key was keeping [the attacker's right] arm, using an outside-90, using a forearm technique — kind of a SPEAR System technique — to keep that knife away from my body until I can get pressure and control and then slip my underhook in to a point where I can get set up to duck in.”

The Combatives for Street Survival Book+DVD Set has been a very successful entry in the ever-expanding Black Belt martial arts multimedia collection. The self-defense content is first-rate, presented by a high-caliber book author and demonstrated on-screen by a dynamic and entertaining modern martial arts instructor. Both the author and presenter in this case are none other than combatives and self-defense expert Kelly McCann, whose no-nonsense approach to fighting has garnered him a reputation for telling it like it is, kicking tail and not waiting around to take names.

In his Combatives for Street Survival Book+DVD Set, the acclaimed instructor delineates the principles of combatives and how to execute them concisely, forcefully and with purpose. Both the book and DVD are content-rich, but it should be pointed out that the content in the Combatives for Street Survival DVDs is directly related to the content in the Combatives for Street Survival book — so much so that we took it upon ourselves to add a special caption track noting where to go in the book for even more in-depth information regarding the subject matter McCann is discussing and demonstrating on-screen.

See the video below for an example:

This special option can be triggered by activating the subtitle track on your DVD player or by going to the last page on each Combatives for Street Survival DVD’s menu by clicking “more” to move through the pages of available content.

On the past page, which features trailers for other Black Belt martial arts DVD titles, you will find the clickable words “Book Pages.”

Clicking on “Book Pages” will take you to an option page explaining the captioning and offering the option to activate it (“Pages On”) or to leave it off (“Pages Off”). When you make your selection, you are then taken back to the main menu. Any tracks you select from that point forward will either have the caption track on or off, depending on the selection you made.

This saves valuable time in looking up various topics in the book and prompts you to seek out more information in the book that perhaps Kelly McCann isn’t addressing on-screen. After all, books are great for presenting in-depth information requiring verbiage, whereas DVDs are a great medium for presenting live-action demonstrations — and while the DVDs are surely content-dense, more information means having a higher degree of advantage for your training and therefore for your self-defense on the street and in the field.
