Karate Videos

After studying the shorei-ryu and shorin-ryu styles of karate in Okinawa, Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) simplified the movements and, in 1921, introduced karate to mainland Japan. By 1939, Gichin Funakoshi had built his first official karate dojo and called it the House of Shoto (Funakoshi’s pen name), or Shotokan.

In this set of karate videos, Kyle Funakoshi, the blood relative of karate’s founder, explains the importance of karate and demonstrates three important foundational techniques of shotokan: the front kick to reverse punch, the reverse punch to front kick and the fake to back combinations.

Another triple sweep of combination karate skills is featured in three videos by Colbey Northcutt. This karateka, who was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame as the 2009 Competitor of the Year, demonstrates side-kick, round-kick and hook-kick combinations.

And what better way to round off the karate videos than with one of America’s early pioneers of karate, Fumio Demura (Black Belt Hall of Fame 1969 Karate Sensei of the Year and 1975 Martial Artist of the Year) demonstrating his patented bo, kama and sai kobudo weapon skills.
