Weapons Videos

Although military and bladed Western-style knives are all considered to be part of the martial arts weapons world—especially in regard to reality-based personal protection programs—it’s important not to lose sight of traditional martial arts weapons.

In four iconic videos, one of America’s early karate pioneers Fumio Demura (Black Belt Hall of Fame: 1969 Karate Sensei of the Year, 1975 Martial Artist of the Year) demonstrates kobudo sai, bo and kama, as well as eku bo (aka kai), a weapon that began as an Okinawan fisherman’s oar. The perfect sister video is Ted Tabura’s demonstrations of the bokken (Japanese wooden “samurai” sword).

In a triumvirate of videos, master samurai swordsman and Black Belt Hall of Fame member (2006 Weapon Instructor of the Year) Masayuki Shimabukuro covers many facets of the samurai sword, including mat cutting, forms, proper sword cleaning, etiquette, thrusts, drawing and sheathing. Other videos feature martial arts veteran James Williams, who demonstrates correct sword drawing, sheathing and cutting skills.

Apart from Japanese weapons, there are videos of krabi krabong swords by Thai special-ops and weapons instructor Col. Nattapong Buayam and hwa rang do sword fighting by hwa rang do grandmaster Taejoon Lee.
