Xtreme Martial Arts, the brainchild of Mike Chaturantabut, is an entertainment brand of martial arts that combines martial arts techniques, acrobatics and gymnastics. With an emphasis on performance, XMA focuses on the flashy martial arts movements seen in the Chinese martial arts films of the early 1980s. It also taps into the quick, whippy movements used in China’s wushu sport competitions and demonstrations.
Although often labeled as a sport that uses traditional martial arts moves that are exaggerated beyond any effective self-defense application, XMA’s true foundation has its roots in traditional Chinese Beijing opera schools—the kind that unintentionally groomed Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung for a career in martial arts cinema. In a sense, one could view XMA practitioners as modern Chinese opera stars with a Western shtick, though without the singing and stage-drama acting.
