Bruce Lee Jeet Kune Do Techniques: Hook-Kick Combo

Bruce Lee Jeet Kune Do Techniques: Hook-Kick Combo

It’s time to continue our study of Bruce Lee’s jeet kune do techniques. Lee maintained that a martial artist must always train, be cautious and alert at all times. In addition to being alert, you must be just as fast when countering an ambush.

Speed is an innate trait, but it also can be developed further. If you are born without speed, then you have to practice daily to acquire it.

To develop your speed, Lee provides tactics and instructions in Bruce Lee’s Fighting Method. In this sequence, the “Little Dragon” demonstrates how you can apply your speed and defend yourself from an attack while entering a car.

As Lee attempts to enter his car, he is aware of the assailant, as in photo 1. As the assailant attempts to kick, Lee surprises him by countering with a side kick to the knee, as in photos 2 and 3. The kick drops the assailant to the ground, as in photos 4 and 5. Lee follows up with a hook kick to the head in photo 6.

Note: It seems that the assailant has the advantage over Lee, but anyone who has seen Lee perform knows how fast he was. Lee is able to counter with a kick because his movement is fluid and quick. To be this quick, you have to practice kicking the air or hitting a light bag. Don’t kick hard while practicing this because you may hurt your knees. Solid kicks should be done on a heavy bag.
