Steve DeMasco — author of the book An American’s Journey to the Shaolin Temple — has been studying martial arts for more than three decades. During that time, he’s ascended to the rank of 10th-degree black belt in Shaolin kempo and has become an honorary ambassador to the Shaolin Temple in China.
The self-defense moves expert is also the recipient of the the John Stanford Education Heroes Award from President Bill Clinton and the former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley, as well as the Director’s Award from former U.S. FBI Director Louis Freeh.
In this exclusive excerpt from the Shaolin training DVD series titled Shaolin Chuan Fa, Steve DeMasco demonstrates a set of self-defense moves to take down an opponent who’s attempting a strike.

Steve DeMasco Demonstrates Chuan Fa Self-Defense Moves
In Shaolin Chuan Fa — Part 2, Steve DeMasco says, “I’ve been training with the monks of the Shaolin Temple now for over 9 years. To my surprise, I found out that these techniques that we teach people right away are very high-level techniques [in their curriculum]. Why? Because they’re lethal techniques. They’re reserved — truly reserved — in China at the temple for high-level monks.”
Steve DeMasco then proceeds to demonstrate a six-element set of self-defense moves against a strike, including the following components:
- strike to the face
- strike to the groin
- neck lock
- neck break
“The system is derived from animal techniques: the tiger, the crane, the leopard, the snake and the dragon,” Steve DeMasco explains in the above video excerpt featuring self-defense moves from the Shaolin training DVD Shaolin Chuan Fa — Part 2. “There are many more animal techniques that they use. They use the deer, they use the bear, they use the mantis … [but] it would take a tremendous amount of time as I go through the technique to explain each and every animal. If you watch closely, you’ll see the characteristics of some of these animals — especially the snake, the crane and the tiger.”

Steve DeMasco’s inside training with the monks at the fabled Shaolin Temple has afforded him the opportunity to share their unique curriculum with the world. “These techniques were designed 1,500 years ago and have been practiced by the Shaolin monks — and now they are available to a few select people worldwide, and I’m very excited to bring this to [those interested in this level of Shaolin training],” he says in Shaolin Chuan Fa — Part 2.
