Don Cunningham

Black Belt contributor Don Cunningham, Ph.D, holds advanced ranks in judo, jujutsu and kendo, including a second-dan license from the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo. A frequent contributor to many martial arts publications, he has studied and written on Japanese modern and traditional martial arts for more than 30 years.

Cunningham has practiced judo and competed in many different countries, including Japan. His tournament records include many state and regional awards. In addition, he has studied kendo and koryu bujutsu styles with various teachers while working in Japan. A former award-winning journalist, he is currently an assistant professor at Radford University in Radford, Virginia.
