Frank Trejo's grandfather introduced him to boxing at age 8, but his formal martial arts training began when he started studying shotokan karate in 1966. Three years later, he started training with Ed Parker and is now a 10th-degree black belt in American kenpo.

As a kickboxer, Trejo holds an amateur record of 14-0 and a professional record of 21-1. He won the California state kickboxing title in 1979, is a 19-time international champion, and is the only kenpo man to place first in both kata and kumite at the Long Beach International Karate Championships. During his career, he captured more than 400 championships.

Trejo delivers seminars internationally and trains karateka, boxers and kickboxers for competition. In 1985, he launched Creative Physical Fitness, a martial-arts exercise program for physically, mentally and socially challenged children. In addition to working as a stunt coordinator and actor, Trejo has instructed or been a bodyguard for Jean-Claude Vann Damme, Lauren Tewes, Billy Idol and David Lee Roth.
