According to Buddhism, the five elements of ground, water, fire, wind and void make up the cosmos. Sword master Miyamoto Musashi used them as the titles of the chapters, or books, in his treatise Go Rin No Sho. Therefore, it contains the following:

  • the Ground Book, which deals with strategy (with samurai weapons and otherwise)
  • the Water Book, which discusses spirit and techniques (for life and for combat with Japanese samurai swords)
  • the Fire Book, which pertains to solo and large-group combat
  • the Wind Book, which highlights (and often dismisses) methods of other schools
  • the Book of the Void, which serves as a philosophical guide to the way of strategy with samurai weapons
