Black Belt contributor Jon Holloway has studied the martial arts for three decades. After starting in various Japanese arts and obtaining instructor ranks and certifications in aikido and aikijujutsu, Holloway immersed himself in Philippine fighting arts. Holloway originally sought out kali in order to develop the skills necessary to survive real-world, realistic knife attacks. He then found albo kali silat, a family stick, knife and empty-hand art, and is now head of the system.

Holloway has been a law-enforcement officer for 17 years. During his career, he has been a local police officer, detective, firearms instructor, a survival-tactics teacher, sergeant, federal special agent, federal SWAT team member and certified federal instructor. He is currently a supervisory special agent for a U.S. federal law-enforcement agency.

Currently, albo kali silat training academies are found in West Virginia and Ohio. Holloway conducts training seminars throughout the United States.
