Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor Lyoto Machida stands out among professional full-contact fighters for a singular style that pleases traditional martial artists more than the average mixed-martial arts fan. Raised by a Japanese father who is also a shotokan karate master, Machida embodies the samurai attitude to battlefield strategy. What some viewers label elusive is a survival strategy that cancels the opponent and draws him in to the Brazilian light-heavyweight’s deadly radius. The five hallmarks of Machida’s fighting method are distance, timing, kick-punch combinations, karate sweeps and ground submissions.
