contributor Matthew J. Numrich is a Chicago-based freelance writer and the owner and chief instructor of Elite Defense Systems. Numrich is certified in jeet kune do and the Philippine martial arts by sifu Paul Vunak (under Dan Inosanto). He also studies Brazilian jiu-jitsu, JKD and kali ilustrisimo with sifu Roy Harris.

In 2000, Numrich produced the Jeet Kune Do Street Fighter DVD series, and soon after he released the Jeet Kune Do Street Fighter Manuscript, which explains how JKD concepts can adapt to all combative situations. He teaches out of his two schools in the Chicago area, has released two other self-defense DVD programs—Insta-D-Fense and Pepper-D-Fense—and has recently worked with the Federal Air Marshals, U.S. Navy and law-enforcement personnel.
