Mike Lee Kanarek

Black Belt Hall of Fame member Mike Lee Kanarek was born in the middle of the Vietnam War. His father was an American soldier and his mother was Vietnamese. The war orphan was adopted by a Jewish family in Belgium. At age 10, Kanarek moved with his family to Israel. When he turned 18, he joined the Israeli Defense Forces and served in one of the elite special-ops units of the notorious Golani Brigade. At age 22, Kanarek moved to the United States. 

Kanarek has been training in martial arts since he was 6 and currently holds the following ranks:
   
    - sixth-degree black belt in Joe Lewis Fighting Systems
    - fourth-degree black belts in hisardut and taekwondo
    - first-degree black belt in krav maga
    - a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu
    - certified muay Thai instructor

One of the best-known pioneers in the reality-fighting movement, Kanarek created haganah, a hand-to-hand combat system. The Davie, Florida-based martial artist now teaches agents affiliated with many local and federal law-enforcement personnel such as the U.S. Coast Guard counterterrorism unit in Miami and the New York Police Department. He also teaches several special-ops military units.
