Two New Books Discuss Different Sides of the Mixed Martial Arts!

THE ROOTS OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS REVEALED IN RE-ISSUED PANKRATION BOOK!

Jim Arvanitis, internationally known as the “Father of Modern Pankration,” presents his brutally effective martial art in The First Mixed Martial Art: Pankration From Myths to Modern Times. Arvanitis explores pankration’s ancient Greek roots, as well as its modern combat and mixed-martial applications.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

For more than four decades, Demetrios “Jim” Arvanitis has stayed true to the traditions of his lineage and to the martial arts and combat sports of ancient Greece. Arvanitis has received myriad awards and has been honored by numerous organizations, including the Greater Boston Hellenic Cultural Society, the New Hampshire Athletic Hall of Fame and the World Martial Arts Alliance. In 2006, he was given “living legend” status by fellow grandmasters in the World Head of Family Sokeship Council. In addition to his contributions to the martial arts world, Arvanitis was the 1966 New England Golden Gloves boxing champion and is a multiple world record holder for thumb push-ups. He continues to teach pankration at the Spartan Academy, USA and in seminars around the world.
The First Mixed Martial Art is arranged in two sections. The first covers the myths and traditions behind the development of sport pankration and the evolution of the Hellenic combat arts. In the second section, Arvanitis uses his decades of teaching experience to instruct the reader in pankration’s methodology and techniques, detailed in scores of photographs and easy-to-follow captions.

The First Mixed Martial Art is a book about pankration by Jim Arvanitis.
Topics include submissions and counters, grappling escapes, sweeps and reversals, takedowns and takedown defenses, ground-and-pound techniques, and knee, kick and hand strikes. In fact, Arvanitis writes, “Be it a front kick, hammerfist or shoulder throw, the lineage of each can be traced back to the ancient Greeks.”

Founded more than 3,000 years ago, pankration (meaning “all powers” or “total strength”) is one of the oldest martial arts in the world and the first to combine striking, grappling and submission techniques. It is widely referenced in Greek mythology and poetry, and it was the cornerstone of the earliest Olympic Games. Many of today’s MMA fighters will be surprised to find their “modern” techniques were used by ancient Olympians in fierce—and often fatal—battles. Regardless of individual style, any martial artist will benefit from the strategies and cultural history presented within.

This 231-page color book will be available soon from Black Belt Books for $24.95.
