Black Belt contributing editor Richard Ryan is one of the nation’s leading authorities on reality-based martial arts, self-protection and tactical weapons training. A longtime advocate of the scientific approach to self-defense, he is the founder of the Dynamic Combat Method and the co-founder of iCAT (Integrated Combative Arts Training) with Joe Lewis and Walt Lysak Jr.

In addition to serving as a bodyguard and firearms instructor, Ryan has designed and implemented tactical survival programs for numerous S.W.A.T., special-operations teams and law-enforcement agencies all over the world. He served for almost a decade on the Arizona Subject Matter Expert Committee and as tactical training adviser to the Arizona Peace Officers Standards and Training Board, where he rewrote the manual on police defensive tactics.
