When discussing the art of the blade, few names carry as much weight as Miyamoto Musashi (1584–1645). According to legend, the revered Japanese swordsman never lost a duel, and he passed down his martial insights in The Book of Five Rings. Centuries after his death, Musashi continues to guide our conduct on the battlefield and in our day-to-day lives.

In , a two-hour documentary on the History channel, Mark Dacascos embarks on a pilgrimage to learn more about the man who taught us what it means to be a warrior. During this martial arts journey, Dacascos learns how to forge and wield a katana, the iconic sword of the samurai, as well as the art of riding into battle while wearing samurai armor. He also discovers the secret to Musashi’s inner peace and outer strength.

“Here was a man who wore death on his shoulder,” Dacascos says. “Yet this guy, who often would just hack bodies to pieces, winds up urging everyone to appreciate life.”

Samurai premieres Tuesday, March 16 at 8 p.m. EST.
