History/Philosophy
Anyone who has ever been attracted to the traditional martial arts has quickly learned that a great deal of their appeal lies in their philosophical underpinnings. From Taoist to Buddhist to Confucian and even Shinto, most Asian arts are inseparable from their spiritual and philosophical origins.
In addition, because of their vital role in shaping history, the arts have been chronicled for thousands of years. They have influenced battles both great and small, and they have been used to conquer empires, overthrow oppressive rulers, and defend against marauders and barbarians of all stripes. Frankly, without the aid of teachers and historians, much of the arts’ philosophies probably would have been lost.
