Karate

Karate is one of the most recognized Japanese martial arts in the world and is characterized by its hard-style kicks, punches and blocks as well as its kata (forms) practice and kumite (sparring) play. Developed in the 1600s, karate was originally an Okinawan self-defense style. Natives of the southern island chain developed the empty-hand combat because the Japanese had outlawed the use of weapons. This also explains the system’s name: kara means empty and te means hand.

Toward the beginning of the 20th century, Gichin Funakoshi developed his own system of karate, known as shotokan. It is this style that is usually taught around the world today. Other popular karate styles include kenpo, goju-ryu, kyokushin, isshin-ryu, shito-ryu, shorinji kempo, shorin-ryu, uechi-ryu, wado-ryu and washin-ryu.
