The ancient Japanese war art of kenjutsu was transformed into the modern martial art of kendo. Kendo, which means sword way, focuses on developing the mind and spirit through regimented drills with a long sword. Competition also plays an important role in the students education. During sparring practice a bokken (wooden sword) is used, but during forms practice and demonstrations a katana (steel sword) is often employed.
The Korean version of kendo is called kumdo. Its name is written with the same two Chinese characters, and its techniques and rules are identical.
