  • Body as Weapon; Discover Bruce Lee's Secret Formula: How His Revolutionary Training Techniques Transformed Martial Arts Forever!

In all the Bruce Lee biographies that have been written, one theme stands out: He was ahead of his time in terms of both martial arts and physical training. The list of professional athletes, media icons and everyday martial artists who have been inspired by his teachings is impressive for good reason. Here are some Bruce Lee Training Techniques. When Lee moved, he embodied the perfect combination of efficiency, effectiveness and aesthetics. What made all that possible was his approach to physical development and health sustainment. For me, a couple of aspects have always stood out. IN TAO OF JEET KUNE DO, LEE ARTICULATES THE IMPORTANCE OF AND STRATEGIES FOR MINIMIZING INJURY. SPECIFICALLY, HE OUTLINES WARM-UPS DESIGNED TO ‘INCREASE TISSUE ELASTICITY, WHICH LESSENS THE LIABILITY TO INJURY.’ FIRST UP IS Lee’s scientific approach to martial arts training, which is well-documented in Tao of Jeet Kune Do, his comprehensive treatise on the art of fighting. By combining teachings from the East and the West, he laid the groundwork for a martial arts curriculum that addresses all aspects of the pursuit, including the spiritual/philosophical foundation, warm-up routine, psychology, and offense and defense. Lee could do this because he was an academic at heart. He researched, analyzed, synthesized and documented his thought processes and findings. And he applied physics to his theories before he made them his conclusions. By being scientific, he was able to arrive at indisputable conclusions about what worked and what didn’t. BECAUSE OF THE growing popularity of the martial arts, more people are studying the arts’ effect on health, as well as the potential for injury. Their research is being conducted in the fields of sports science, physiology, medicine, nutrition and rehabilitation, among others. Once again, Lee was on the cutting edge. Why do I say this? Because his work is an important part of the academic lineage of the martial arts and because his ideas continue to be studied, discussed and, occasionally, refined. In all that he did, Lee paid close attention to proper training and injury prevention. He knew that despite his incredible physique and physical abilities, he had to train consistently and properly to avoid injuries that might necessitate a break from training. Couple that with his hectic filmmaking schedule, and you’ll understand how much time management was required for him to maintain his skills at the highest level. EXAMPLE: Sports medicine professionals always emphasize injury prevention. In the martial arts, practitioners are at great risk while landing after a jumping technique. Lee was well aware of such dangers. In Tao of Jeet Kune Do, he articulates the importance of and strategies for minimizing injury. Specifically, he outlines warm-ups designed to “increase tissue elasticity, which lessens the liability to injury.” He also notes that different warm-ups are required for different activities and that routines need to be modified according to the practitioner’s age. Another example of Lee’s forward thinking methodologies comes from his weight-training advice: He implored martial artists to lift only an amount of weight they can handle without undue strain. This concept of training without exceeding one’s physiologic threshold is, in my opinion, ideal in martial arts practice. If you’re laid up because you lifted too much or used improper form, you’re unable to work on skill development. Even worse, the injury could become chronic or permanent, forever impairing your ability to improve in your art. AS I STATED in the introduction, Lee was ahead of his time. He put forth a comprehensive martial arts curriculum that incorporates awareness of one’s health and injury prevention. As I reflect on him, I continue to be impressed by his vast knowledge of and many contributions to the martial arts, which he viewed as both an art and a science. To borrow a concept from politics: There’s hard power, there’s soft power and there’s smart power, which combines the other two. By following Lee’s teachings, we can more efficiently develop smart power.

  • Michael "Venom" Page Eyes Welterweight Title with Strategic Matchups in UFC, starting with UFC 303

Michael "Venom" Page has firmly established himself as a formidable contender in the UFC welterweight division. With a clear strategy in place, he aims to leverage pivotal opportunities to climb the ranks towards the 170-pound championship. Page's remarkable entrance into the UFC spotlight occurred at UFC 299, where he secured a victory over Kevin Holland, positioning him 14th in the welterweight rankings. His next challenge comes at UFC 303, where he will face the undefeated Irish fighter, Ian Machado Garry. This fight surfaced unexpectedly, a product of altered plans within the UFC. Originally slated to face Colby Covington, Garry found a new opponent in Page when Covington withdrew. Page views this as a fortuitous chance to disrupt the division's hierarchy. "I think a win over Ian Garry just positions me in the top five," Page shared with UFC.com . He believes a top-five ranking places a fighter within arm's reach of a title bout, hence his focus on positioning himself advantageously. The dynamic between Page and Garry has intensified as the fight approaches, with Garry having previously dismissed Page’s capabilities. Page interprets Garry's demeanor as cautious, possibly intimidated by Page’s viral fame and prowess in the ring. As UFC 303 approaches, the tension between Page and Garry promises a thrilling start to the pay-per-view event. Page remains focused not only on enhancing his own skills but also on understanding his opponent to exploit any vulnerabilities during the match. Looking ahead, a victory over Machado Garry could propel Page into the welterweight top five, setting the stage for a potential historic all-UK title fight against Leon Edwards, should Edwards triumph over Belal Muhammad at UFC 304. Aiming for another bout by year's end, Page envisions a title fight in the UK early in 2025. Catch all the action at UFC 303: Pereira vs Procházka 2, broadcasting live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

  • Utility vs. Combat: Tomahawks and Trade Knives

A THOUGHTFUL QUESTION FROM MITCH MITCHELL, AN AFFILIATE COACH OF AMERICAN FRONTIER ROUGH AND TUMBLE, PROMPTED ME TO COMMIT TO PAPER SOME OBSERVATIONS REGARDING TWO COMMON TOOLS/ WEAPONS OF THE FRONTIER. FIRST, THE EXCHANGE THAT LED TO ALL THIS: Question: “Am I on the right track or holding my danged knife wrong?” My reply : “Bowie designs are manifold. My personal preference falls toward a flat-spine knife with a half-guard because a spineside guard or broken spine jams up my thumb on a sincere stab in a saber grip. For me, anyway, a nice, straight, full-power stab with a hammer grip on the high line is impossible, and anyway it is a wrist killer.” Mitchell’s question is a common one that can lead us one step closer to weapons wisdom. First, I will point out that discovering that certain tactics and grips are wrist killers is possible only when we invest time in hard training with hard targets. If we stick with mirror play, shadow play or tit-for-tat flow drills with a partner using mock weapons, we likely will never stumble on the realities that make certain tactics ill-advised. As they say, train real to find real. Now, here’s my take on the subject of blades and self-defense in American history:  First, trade-knife designs were myriad. Likewise, tomahawk designs were myriad. Beyond a knife being a knife and a ’hawk being a ’hawk, mass-produced, perfectly weighted commercial blades made specifically for combat were a rarity. There were a variety of designs, weights, lengths, guards, etc., in circulation. To survive, one had to be skilled with a variety of tool/weapon interfaces. When modern afficionados fall into a this-is-my-carry-blade mindset, they miss the point of training with these historical items. I say that because a knife was a tool first and foremost. Cutting rope, making fuzz sticks for starting campfires, skinning game and all the other actions one needed to undertake in order to survive on the frontier were of paramount importance. Having a knife that served only as a weapon was uncommon. The same goes for the tomahawk, which we shouldn’t forget was primarily a hatchet or camp ax. Knives and ’hawks are similar in that both were tools intended for daily use. In all likelihood, the bearers hoped never to need to wield them for martial matters. Today, we tend to invert the tool-choice pyramid. We often select blades for martial purposes that we envision. Often, we wouldn’t dare dull their sheen on mundane matters. I’m not pretending that I use all the blades in my collection for everyday cutting and chopping. With an eye on historical accuracy, I do own some pretty toys that I don’t ding. However, I have a variety of fair-to-middling knives and ’hawks that I’ve acquired in antique shops, and all are mighty functional. I enjoy using them as the tools they were intended to be and training with them to take full advantage of all their martial aspects. I experience growth whenever I’m forced to modify my technique to deal with different weights and lengths as I discover which tactics shake out as functional across all weapon interfaces and thus are of high utility. It’s also beneficial to learn which tactics are specific to a single tool because they must be culled from my repertoire. My final advice: Go with whatever blade feels right in your hand. When you find that a particular tactic or technique jams a digit, hurts your hand or simply makes you feel uncomfortable, get rid of said move. If you don’t and you ever have to use your tool for real, you won’t do it with conviction. Remember that it’s perfectly OK to not know or use every trick in the book. It’s never OK to keep things just so you can feel complete or check a move off a list.  Never lose sight of the fact that tomahawks were hatchets and knives were knives. They were designed for work, and fighting was just a blip on the radar. In modern times, it’s easy to fixate on buying expensive items for fake fighting and lose sight of the daily utility they were intended for. Mark Hatmaker’s website is extremeselfprotection.com

  • Russian Judo Federation Boycotts Paris Olympics Over IOC Athlete Selection Controversy

Amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, the Russian Judo Federation has decided to boycott the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently finalized its list of judokas eligible to compete, limiting Russian participation to just four athletes out of seventeen who qualified based on Olympic ranking standards. The decision by the IOC has sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that it undermines the Olympic spirit of fair competition and inclusivity. The Russian Judo Federation, in a unanimous decision by its Presidium, condemned the IOC's selection process as unsportsmanlike and detrimental to the integrity of the Games. By withdrawing from the Paris Olympics, the Russian Federation aims to protest what it perceives as divisive and politically motivated athlete selection criteria. They assert that the exclusion of their athletes diminishes the credibility and competitiveness of the Olympics, emphasizing the need for reforms to restore the core values of Olympism. This move is seen as a significant stand against what the Federation views as attempts to undermine the unity and purity of sport on the global stage.

In the realm of judo, one name towers above all others: Teddy "Teddy Bear” Riner. Standing at an imposing 2.04 meters (6 feet 8 inches) and weighing in at a formidable 130 kilograms (290 lbs), Riner has carved out a legacy as the most successful judoka in history.  Photo credit Judo Inside Growing up in Les Abymes in the Caribbean, Judo Champion Teddy Riner's extraordinary journey began when he was just five years old. His parents, seeking to nurture his talents, enrolled him in a multisport club in Paris. Little did they know that this decision would set the stage for their son's remarkable rise to greatness in the world of judo. Even from a young age, Riner showed a remarkable aptitude for judo, as well as a passion for football. However, faced with the challenge of balancing sports and studies, he ultimately made the difficult choice to focus all his energy on judo. Guided by his Sensei Alain Perriot at Paris Judo and later Judo Club Bolivar, Riner dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his craft, laying the groundwork for what would become an illustrious career. Riner's achievements speak volumes about his unparalleled talent and dedication. With an impressive eleven World Championships gold medals to his name, he stands alone as the only judoka, regardless of gender, to achieve such a remarkable feat. Moreover, he proudly holds three Olympic gold medals, two individual and one as part of a team, in addition to five gold medals from the European Championships. His dominance in the sport is truly awe-inspiring, with an unbeaten streak that stretches back to 2010, encompassing an incredible 154 victories. Along the way, he has triumphed in prestigious events like the World Masters in Doha and the Grand Slam in Paris, solidifying his status as a true legend of judo. Yet, behind Riner's unparalleled success lies a humble mindset instilled in him from a young age. He recounts a formative moment in his childhood when he underestimated his older brother in a judo match, only to suffer a swift defeat. This experience taught him the importance of never underestimating any opponent, no matter how modest they may seem. Throughout his journey, Riner has proudly represented multiple clubs, including Paris Judo, Judo Club Bolivar, Lagardère Paris Racing, and Levallois Sporting Club. Guided by esteemed coaches such as Alain Perriot, Dominique Paolotzi, Serge Dyot, and Christian Chaumont, Riner's evolution as a judoka has been shaped by their expertise and mentorship. Despite his imposing physique, Riner's greatest asset lies in his relentless work ethic and dedication to his craft. His intense training regimen, coupled with the guidance of his coaches, has propelled him to the pinnacle of judo, setting a standard of excellence that few can rival. As Teddy Riner continues to etch his name in the annals of judo history, his journey serves as a testament to the power of determination, perseverance, and unwavering passion.
