- ONE Fight Night 21 Recap
ONE Fight Night 21 capped off an exciting doubleheader for ONE Championship. A new champion was crowned at night's end, and a new era began. Regian Eersel was considered one of the pound-for-pound best strikers on the planet, but Alexis Nicolas did not listen to the hype. The French striker got a knockdown in the second round to put "The Immortal" against the odds. Never broken by Eersel's pace, Nicolas made it to the final bell to upset the Surinamese star and win the ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Championship. Tye Ruotolo successfully defended the ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Championship against Izaak Michell. Although Michell briefly had the American's back, a quick reversal sealed his fate. Just like his brother earlier in the night, Ruotolo secured a modified choke to get the win, and he even did it five seconds quicker than Kade. Ben Tynan continued his trek to becoming a superstar in the sport with another dominant victory. The rising heavyweight dominated Duke Didier to move into title contention, with Anatoly Malykhin taking notice of his performance. Tynan does not just have the in-ring skills but brings added charisma, making him a must-watch star in 2024. Denis Puric and Jacob Smith threw down, but Puric came out with a win thanks to timely knockdowns. By toppling the No.2 ranked contender in the flyweight Muay Thai division, Puric got closer to his dream match against Rodtang Jitmuangnon. The slick performance showed he still has much left to give at the division's top. Kade Ruotolo had his MMA debut announced for ONE 167, but he had to contend with Francisco Lo before preparing for that match. All he did was unveil a new submission. Ruotolo continued to keep his ONE record perfect and set the stage for a highly-anticipated debut to showcase his well-rounded skill set. Hiroyuki Tetsuka kept piling up the wins at welterweight by defeating Valmir Da Silva by second-round submission. The "Japanese Beast" clearly cemented his spot at the top of the division, eyeing a title match against Christian Lee. Tetsuka's impressive five-bout winning streak is unmatched as he continues gaining fans with finish after finish. ONE Fight Night 21 is available on-demand on Prime Video . - Mallayudha: India's Ancient Wrestling Tradition and Its Evolution Through the Ages
Mallayudha, the traditional form of Indian wrestling, carries a rich tapestry of history and cultural significance that has evolved over millennia. Once a formidable martial art practiced by warriors and royalty, this ancient sport has transcended its martial roots to become a blend of athletic competition and spiritual discipline. This article explores the ancient origins of Mallayudha, its progression through the ages, the various styles prevalent in India today, and its contemporary relevance. The origins of Mallayudha can be traced back to the Vedic period, with references found in the early sacred texts like the Rigveda and the Ramayana. The term "Malla" signifies a wrestler while "Yuddha" means combat or battle, indicating a form of wrestling combat. Historically, Mallayudha was more than a sport; it was a crucial skill for warriors, often deciding the fates of kingdoms and used to resolve disputes between rivals without the bloodshed of full-scale war. As centuries passed, Mallayudha became a part of royal spectacle and ceremony, with detailed rules and rituals. The art was governed by four categories, which defined the techniques and methods permissible in the combat: Hanumanti, focusing on technical superiority; Jarasandhi, emphasizing joint locks and breaks; Bhimaseni, specializing in sheer strength; and Jambuvanti, which utilized holds and breathing control techniques. In ancient and medieval India, the transmission of Mallayudha skills was primarily conducted in traditional wrestling schools known as akharas. These were often run by experienced gurus who were not just teachers of physical skills but also custodians of spiritual and ethical teachings. The akharas served as centers for learning various life skills, moral and ethical lessons, and physical fitness regimes. The advent of colonial rule and the introduction of new sports and recreational activities saw a decline in traditional martial arts like Mallayudha. However, the 20th century witnessed a resurgence of interest in indigenous sports, with Mallayudha being incorporated into the broader category of Indian wrestling, which also includes modern freestyle wrestling. This integration helped preserve many aspects of the ancient art, albeit in a modified form. In contemporary times, Mallayudha has largely been overshadowed by the more structured Kushti wrestling, which is a synthesis of traditional techniques and modern Olympic wrestling rules. Yet, traditional Mallayudha still survives in some rural areas of India, where annual tournaments and traditional festivals keep this ancient art alive. Today, Mallayudha is characterized by a variety of regional styles, each with its own unique techniques and cultural heritage. The primary styles include: Pehlwani - The most widespread form of traditional wrestling in India, which combines elements of Mallayudha with Persian wrestling influences. Vajra-musti - An intense form where combatants use knuckledusters, blending the grappling techniques of Mallayudha with weapon use. Malla-kambha - A style that focuses on wrestling around a pole, testing the wrestler’s agility and strength in a confined space. In the 21st century, efforts are underway to revive and promote Mallayudha not only as a sport but as a cultural heritage. Organizations like the Indian Wrestling Federation and various cultural heritage foundations are working to document, promote, and institutionalize Mallayudha through workshops, exhibitions, and inclusion in cultural festivals. The aim is to sustain interest and participation in Mallayudha, ensuring it remains a living link to India's ancient martial traditions. Mallayudha, with its deep historical roots and rich cultural significance, remains a poignant reminder of India’s martial heritage. As we move forward, the challenge remains to preserve this ancient art form while adapting it to the sensibilities and requirements of the modern world, ensuring that it does not fade into obscurity but thrives as a beacon of India’s diverse and profound cultural identity.
- How five-year absence from the sport prepared Chad Griffiths for unprecedented run at the BRAVE CF world title
Chad Griffiths might seem like a typical MMA fighter with a modest seven-fight resume on paper but appearances can be deceiving. With more than a decade of experience in combat sports, Griffiths is a seasoned campaigner eyeing the prestigious BRAVE CF Super Lightweight title. The British MMA star will be making his return at BRAVE CF 81 when he fights Slovenia’s David Forster. Griffiths heads into this fight on the back of his first-round submission win over Abbas Khan at BRAVE CF 80. Securing a win over Forster at BRAVE CF 81 could elevate Griffiths as an interesting contender for reigning Super Lightweight champion Eldar Eldarov. While the title pursuit of Griffiths is indeed a major storyline heading into BRAVE CF 81, what stands out is the fact that his win over Abbas Khan came after a long gap of five years away from MMA. For most fighters, such a long break would have resulted in lost momentum but Griffiths was keeping himself busy with bare knuckle fighting; in turn giving him some extra pop on his shots as evident from his fight against Abbas Khan. Griffiths' contributions to the sport during this break, nevertheless, goes beyond his own performances. Under the guidance of British MMA legend Brad Pickett, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the Great Britain Top Team into one of the best teams in the UK and Europe. His dedication to training and his willingness to share his knowledge have undoubtedly contributed to the success of the team while also boosting his own skill set. Now that he is back to being active in MMA, Griffiths looks determined to make up for the long gap that he took. With a 100 percent finish rate in his MMA career, the Brit is indeed a force to be reckoned with in the BRAVE CF Super Lightweight division and at BRAVE CF 81, he has one more chance to prove this.
- Ahead of UFC 300: The Rise and Reign of the BMF Title
In the world of UFC, surprises come in various forms, and Nate Diaz, the charismatic fighter from Stockton, California, knows exactly how to deliver them. Following his victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241, Diaz, never one to mince words, threw down a new challenge. He claimed the title of the "baddest mother****er in the game" and expressed his desire to defend this honor against Jorge Masvidal. Thus, the legend of the BMF title was born. This unique title has seen action in the Octagon only twice since its inception, with the first battle commencing in November 2019. As we approach the third showdown for the BMF belt at UFC 300, where Justin Gaethje defends his title against the former featherweight champion Max Holloway, it's the perfect time to revisit the electrifying encounters that have defined the BMF legacy. The Inaugural UFC BMF Title: Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal (UFC 244) The first chapter of the BMF story unfolded in the iconic Madison Square Garden, with Diaz and Masvidal as the protagonists of this historic event. Adding to the spectacle, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson presented the newly created BMF belt, setting the stage for a memorable clash. Masvidal, riding high on a knockout spree, unleashed a barrage of attacks that had Diaz on the ropes. Yet, Diaz's resilience and relentless trash talk kept the fight competitive until a cut above his eye led to a doctor's stoppage. Despite the abrupt end, Masvidal's victory was a testament to his incredible year, celebrated with the BMF title ceremoniously wrapped around his waist by "The Rock." The Second Showdown: Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje (UFC 291) Years passed before the BMF title found its way back into the spotlight, this time with Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje vying for the honor in a much-anticipated rematch. Their first encounter was a battle for the ages, and the sequel did not disappoint. Gaethje's unexpected head kick knockout victory over Poirier not only won him the fight but also saw Masvidal passing on the BMF title, a symbolic gesture of the unyielding spirit these warriors embody. The Upcoming Clash: Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway (UFC 300) As UFC 300 approaches, anticipation builds for the clash between Gaethje and Holloway, two of the most admired fighters in the league. With high stakes for both fighters, this battle is not just about the BMF title but also their future in the UFC. Gaethje is fighting to maintain his position as a top lightweight contender, while Holloway eyes a comeback in the featherweight division and a potential shot at history by winning titles in two weight classes. April 13 promises a confrontation that epitomizes the BMF title's essence: a showcase of heart, skill, and an unbreakable warrior spirit. As Gaethje and Holloway prepare to face off, fans eagerly await a fight that will undoubtedly add another thrilling chapter to the BMF saga.
- From a broken household to breaking bones: BRAVE CF Award Winner David Forster aiming to complete his Rocky story on home soil
Beyond the flashy skills and bright lights, MMA is a sport in which the ability to triumph over adversity stands out and Slovenia’s David Forster at BRAVE CF is no stranger to such situations. From the depths of a broken household to the global spotlight in BRAVE Combat Federation, Forster has seen it all. Growing up in Ljubljana, Slovenia, sports became a refuge for Forster amidst the turmoil of a broken family. From the age of six, he displayed exceptional talent as a goalkeeper in football, but it was a chance encounter with a match between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer that ignited his passion for tennis. Inspired by Nadal, Forster pursued tennis until financial difficulties which stemmed from his parents’ divorce forced him to abandon his dreams of a professional tennis career. The aftermath of his parents' divorce had more than just financial implications in the life of Forster. It dragged him into a period of darkness, marked by weight gain and emotional turmoil. But this was not going to stop him. “It was difficult for me; I do not really remember 2-3 years when I was fat. They are just kind of a blur. I think I got over it in high-school, I just kind of accepted it and moved on with my life,” Forster recalls. With the guidance of a motivating PE teacher in high school, he embarked on a journey of self-discovery, realizing that he possessed the power to transform his life through hard work and dedication. Soon, he started his journey in MMA and there was no looking back. “I have been drawing inspiration from that [struggles in life] since I was nine years old. I feel like anyone can achieve anything with hard work, you just need to put everything you have into it and you can be successful in anything,” he says. Forster came in with this same attitude when he went up against Nemanja Nikolic in his BRAVE CF debut at BRAVE CF 70. The Slovenian staged one of the craziest comeback victories in BRAVE Combat Federation in this fight and finished Nikolic in the third-round to set the tone for his journey in the most global MMA organization in the world. His never-say-die attitude elevated him to a Rocky-like figure in front of the BRAVE Nation thanks to this fight. He followed this up with another impressive performance against Mohsen Mohammadseifi at BRAVE CF 79. The fight ended up going into the BRAVE CF history books as the 2023 Fans’ Fight of The Year as well. Four months later, Forster is now preparing to showcase his Rocky story once again at BRAVE Combat Federation. He returns to fight British veteran Chad Griffiths at BRAVE CF 81 and this time around, he has some added motivation as well since he will be fighting on his home soil in Slovenia.
- Alexander Hernandez's Relentless Pursuit: A Fighter's Journey Through Challenges and Triumphs
Alexander Hernandez is steadfast in his UFC featherweight journey, despite some stumbles along the way. His optimism remains unshaken as he prepares for his third fight in the division, facing Damon Jackson this Saturday. Despite missing the official weight, Hernandez's spirit isn't dampened. "Keeping at it until I get it right? Absolutely," Hernandez shares with a laugh, reflecting on his recent challenges, including two tough losses at 145 pounds. But his resolve is clear, "I know there's potential here, and I'm determined to unlock it." Hernandez admits the journey hasn’t been easy, with setbacks against Billy Quarantillo and Bill Algeo giving him reasons for reflection and possible rematch aspirations. "It's tough looking ahead without wanting to right those wrongs first," he confesses. However, his focus remains sharp, "If I don't feel I have a distinct advantage at this weight, I won’t stick with it. But right now, I feel stronger and faster than ever." The journey has not been without humor or introspection. Hernandez quips about the other fighters named Bill in his division, including France's Willian Gomis, signaling both the light-hearted and serious sides of his competitive nature. An unfortunate MCL injury had previously hampered his performance, but Hernandez is now more cautious, prioritizing his health over hasty decisions. "As fight night approaches, I’m focused on what I can control," he notes, explaining his shift in strategy after injury setbacks. His recent training, enhanced with new coaching, has brought improvements in speed and technique, raising his confidence. Hernandez looks ahead with a blend of realism and confidence. "I can't afford another loss, but I also feel untouchable—like I’m close to perfection in my training," he states boldly. His career at this stage is not just about fighting; it's about embodying the mindset of a winner, believing in his exceptional capabilities, and turning those beliefs into reality inside the octagon. "Let's put ourselves in the mindset of a winner," Hernandez declares, his voice full of resolve. "We're better than this; we're special. And I believe it every day in training. Now, it's all about execution on game day." With his eyes set on victory, Hernandez is ready to face his next challenge, determined to make his mark and earn not just victories, but a lasting legacy in the UFC.

Melissa Mullins, affectionately known as "No Mess," approaches her upcoming UFC Fight Night bout with a mix of humility and determination. It’s a passion that keeps me going, even when the training gets tough." She's fought tougher opponents and emerged stronger, crafting a career from the grit of an underdog to the spotlight of potential UFC stardom. Through it all, the support from her team and growing fanbase fuels her journey, reminding her that every challenging day in training is worth the joy of competition. Melissa Mullins’ story is more than just about fights won or lost; it’s about embracing every moment, underdog or not, with a fighter's heart and a champion's spirit.
- Damon Jackson Embraces Old-School Fighting Spirit in Upcoming UFC Co-Main Event
Whenever Damon Jackson is asked a hypothetical, his answers reflect a profound passion for mixed martial arts. Imagine if time travel were possible and Jackson could compete in the inaugural 1993 UFC events. His response is enthusiastic and immediate. "Absolutely," Jackson affirms. "Fights back then had no time limits, ensuring that every bout ended decisively. Today, fighters often play it safe to impress the judges, but I admire the straightforward, finish-focused rules of the past. It would be thrilling to experience that era." Jackson, a seasoned featherweight, is not merely reminiscing. His career record shows a preference for decisive outcomes, with 25 of his 30 fights ending before the judges could score them. This approach has quietly garnered him a growing fanbase, despite his low profile on social media. His upcoming match against Alexander Hernandez is no exception. Set as the co-main event this Saturday at UFC APEX, the fight promises fireworks. Jackson, often underestimated, sees these bouts as opportunities to surprise and surpass expectations. "Many people overlook my abilities because I'm not the flashiest fighter out there," he chuckles. "Yet, consistently finishing fights and defeating favored opponents should earn respect. Ultimately, it adds pressure to my opponents, which works in my favor." Jackson's focus is unwavering as he prepares for each fight with rigorous discipline. He rarely pays attention to external chatter, choosing instead to concentrate on his training and readiness. "I'm always working hard and making sure I'm at my peak for every fight," he explains. His anticipation for the bout with Hernandez is high, fueled by his opponent's reputation and readiness. For Jackson, the goals are clear: perform at his best, secure the win, and perhaps earn a performance bonus. "It's about instant gratification for me," he states plainly. Damon Jackson remains a dedicated, straightforward competitor, driven not by fame but by the love of the sport and the thrill of competition.
