  • Jarred Brooks Shows Renewed Focus After Daughter's Birth Ahead Of ONE 166, Qatar

At ONE 166: Qatar, Jarred Brooks will see Joshua Pacio standing across from him once again. Only this time, he is the ONE Strawweight MMA World Champion. In his first defense of the gold on Friday, March 1, ONE Championship's strawweight king is sure he has his familiar foe figured out. "I'm not looking past Joshua. I know that he's hunting back and he has always done well on his rematches, but I have that in my head as well. Like, I'm not dumb. I already know what this guy is going to be coming with ," Brooks told ONE. "He's going to try to work on his weight cut. He's going to try to work on his angles. He's going to be more aggressive, but I'm ready for that. I've been training for that the whole time." Pacio earned his title shot by defeating Mansur Malachiev in 2023. Pacio got to briefly showcase his improved grappling, a crucial tool he will need to take back the title. However, Brooks was less than impressed and thinks the outcome will be the same in the rematch. "I see that he's trying to be more explosive on the entries. I'm always changing angles and moving, so I know he's gonna be trying to hit like threes with me. So it's a different stylistic opponent when you're going against somebody for the second time," Brooks stated. "So I think that Josh is going to be trying to hit three-punch combinations, and I think that's gonna go against everything that he was working on in that last fight. So I think he's necessarily screwed either way." If there is any point of emphasis for the American star, it is proving he has finishing abilities. "The Monkey God" has all the tools to end the bout standing or on the ground. He wants to add to his highlight reel and cash a performance bonus check for his newborn daughter. "I'm there to get a $50,000 bonus for the first time. Even though I have two finishes against two top-five opponents, I'm there for it. For more than just money, though, I'm there for my belt, and I'm there to go out and provide for my daughter and my family," Brooks confessed. "I want it to be quick. I want it to be swift. And I want it to surprise him and surprise all of the people in Qatar and surprise Chatri that I actually have a really big knockout power for the size that I am." After running through the strawweight division, Brooks is already beginning to eye greater challenges. At the top of his list is one name — Demetrious Johnson. After chasing "Mighty Mouse" for years, Brooks finally feels that match is near. Johnson needs a challenger for his gold and Brooks has taken care of business at strawweight. The stage could be set for a meeting between the U.S. stars. "I want Demetrious Johnson. I mean, who is he going to fight? Yuya Wakamatsu? Who is he going to fight? You know, the people that he's already beat are in the top five. Nobody wants to see that," the ONE Strawweight MMA World Champion said. "So I think that it's going to be a very interesting fight, especially at Demetrious' age, and I'm not even using that as [an excuse]. Because I do think that I could beat Demetrious Johnson five years ago, where I'm at." "And I think that I can prove it when I go against Joshua Pacio. Everybody might laugh and might think that it's a fallacy. But I don't think that is in my head. I know that Demetrious Johnson is somebody that I can capitalize on. I've been studying him for years and I don't think that he's ready for somebody to bring a quiet storm like me." Regardless of what comes next, Brooks is extremely confident he will get his arm raised. That motivation stems from his daughter giving him renewed focus ahead of ONE 166. "I think that all of my opponents, they need to watch out because, you know, you hear this crying baby in the background, and she is the biggest thing to me," Brooks warned his future opponents. "I am so ready to rip all of your heads off and get that money for my baby just to get her some food and to make sure that she has the best life possible. I'm gonna get college tuition paid for her through all of your guys's heads. I appreciate you. I love you. But it's got to happen." ONE 166 airs live and free on Prime Video  on Friday, March 1. The action begins at 7:30 a.m. EST/4:30 a.m. PST.

  • Anatoly Malykhin Beams With Confidence Before Shot At Third World Title at ONE 166, Qatar

Anatoly Malykhin has reigned over ONE Championship since his arrival on the scene. The undefeated Russian powerhouse stands atop both the heavyweight and light heavyweight mountains, and he is eyeing the middleweight peak at ONE 166: Qatar  on Friday, March 1. "Sladkiy" feels no pressure ahead of his rematch against Reinier De Ridder. He is loving life and training. Part of the confidence stems from his dominance against De Ridder during their first encounter. With the rematch looming, Malykhin believes he knows what he can expect and that it will make no difference to the final result. "This time, we focused on wrestling; I'm pretty sure De Ridder will try to wrestle with me. We worked a lot on freestyle wrestling, so it will be hard to take me down, and we also worked on jiu-jitsu," Malykhin told ONE. The Russian superstar even questions what "The Dutch Knight" expects to accomplish after experiencing his overwhelming power. The confidence could be seen as arrogance to some, but it is just a matter of fact for Malykhin. "Yes, surely he has already drawn conclusions from our previous encounter, but what could he do since then? I don't think he's learned how to fight in the stand-up, or how to punch hard, or how to freestyle wrestle," the two-division World Champion said. In preparation for his drop to middleweight, Malykhin has taken up swimming. The additional training has more benefits beyond just his weight drop. Malykhin is focusing on adding to his cardio. As he becomes even more well-rounded, the Russian says he can adapt on the fly and become an even greater threat to anyone who tries to become the first man to give him a loss. "The scary thing for all my opponents is that I don't have a plan for any fight at all. I just go out there and do what I love doing and enjoy it. When we get in the cage with De Ridder, we'll see in the first scrap what De Ridder can do at 93 kilograms. I think it's going to be the same as last time," Malykhin claimed. Already the winner in his head, Malykhin is not even focused on what will come next. As a potential three-division titleholder, the Russian will have many challengers waiting for their shot at glory. Malykhin is leaving the decision for what comes next up to the matchmakers, as he will accept whatever or whoever steps up next. "I don't worry about that. I fight every opponent I can. There are matchmakers who make the cards. They know what's best for ONE. They have more experience, they have a better view of the situation, they have more experience in this business than I do. And I'm ready to fight anybody. There's no difference to me. I'm ready to fight any two of these guys at the same time on the same night," Malykhin said. ONE 166 airs live and free on Prime Video  on Friday, March 1. The action begins at 7:30 a.m. EST/4:30 a.m. PST.

  • Optimizing Core Strength: The Bruce Lee Method for Martial Arts Mastery

A robust core is not just beneficial but essential across all forms of martial arts, grappling included. Bruce Lee's approach to abdominal training exemplifies a perfect blend of form and function, targeting not only the development of a potent, explosive core but also sculpting the abs with precision. Lee's dedication to selecting exercises that enhance strength and speed was unmatched, and his understanding that true power emanates from the core—the center, hips, and abdominals—was revolutionary. These muscles are crucial for executing kicks, punches, jumps, and sprints, while also providing vital stability to the spine. Bruce Lee's daily core training regimen was not about overpowering the muscles but rather nurturing them to grow stronger progressively. His training intensity and dedication were unparalleled, as was his speed and explosiveness, a testament even acknowledged by contemporaries like Bolo Yeung, who praised Lee's remarkable strength. Lee's emphasis on the abdominal muscles as a primary source of power and explosiveness suggests that adopting a similar focus could be beneficial for anyone looking to enhance their martial arts skills. Daily Abdominal Training: A Path to Core Mastery The abdominals are engaged in virtually all daily activities, from sitting and standing up to more dynamic movements like running or practicing martial arts. Their role in facilitating tension and stability is critical for initiating explosive movements. It's feasible and effective to train your abs daily, balancing between strength and endurance exercises one day, and fast-twitch, explosive movements the next, varying intensity based on the workout. Bruce Lee’s Abdominal Training Tips: Quality Over Quantity:  Focus on the speed and precision of each movement, ensuring each repetition is performed with mindfulness and intention. Push Beyond Limits:  When maximum reps seem unattainable, engage in short, intense burst half-reps to drive further separation and development in the abs. Static Holds:  Conclude each session with static isometric contractions for sustained tension. Consistency and Patience:  Exercise your abs daily, understanding that results will accrue over time. Central Control:  Recognize the abdominals as a pivotal center for coordinating body movements, enhancing overall control and physical discipline. Proper Technique:  Emphasize a curling motion in sit-ups to maximize effectiveness, akin to rolling a paper roll. Lee also stressed the importance of diet in defining the abs, advocating for a nutrition plan devoid of starches, sugars, fried foods, and alcohol. His core routine featured a mix of high-repetition exercises, static holds, and short bursts of intense activity post-exhaustion, incorporating movements like waist twists, sit-up twists, leg raises, leaning twists, and frog kicks, alongside Roman Chair sit-ups, side bends, and isometric holds. Bruce Lee's abdominal training regimen is a testament to his belief in the interconnectedness of diet, disciplined training, and core strength in achieving martial arts excellence. By integrating these principles into one's training routine, martial artists can aspire to reach new heights of power, stability, and control.

  • Five Tips to Dramatically Improve Your Martial Art Training

Transforming Martial Arts Practice: A Comprehensive Guide to Mastery In the realm of martial arts, the journey from novice to master is marked by small, yet significant, steps. Every martial artist began their journey with a single class, a session that ignited a passion for self-improvement, whether for self-defense or achieving peak physical health. This guide is designed for martial artists at every level, offering pivotal advice to enhance training, learning, and teaching methodologies dramatically. Here are 5 ways to improve your martial art training. 1. Revitalize Your Training Space: Improve Your Martial Art Training Consider the specific functions of rooms within a home: bedrooms for rest, kitchens for cooking. The incongruity of placing a toilet in the living room highlights the importance of purposeful space design. Just as a TV in the bedroom can disrupt sleep, a martial arts studio must be optimized for learning and growth. Changing your training environment can push you out of your comfort zone, fostering self-awareness and adaptability in various settings. This adjustment can serve as a powerful catalyst for personal development. 2. Embrace Collaboration and Seek New Perspectives Contrary to the belief that martial arts is a solitary pursuit, it is, in fact, a collective endeavor spanning generations and cultures. Engaging with peers and mentors, exploring diverse techniques, and understanding various interpretations enriches one’s practice. Learning from different sources, including books and recordings recommended by instructors, opens up new avenues for growth and understanding. 3. Remember Your 'Why' The reasons for starting martial arts vary widely, from overcoming bullying to emulating figures like Bruce Lee. It's essential to hold onto the motivation that sparked your interest and sustained your commitment. Life's changes can challenge your dedication, but remembering your foundational 'why' can reignite your passion and guide your journey towards mastery. 4. Observe the Unspoken Lessons The subtleties of martial arts, often unarticulated by instructors, are critical to advancing one’s skill. Paying close attention to details like weight distribution and movement intention can bridge the gap between your abilities and those of your teacher. Recording observations through notes or media can help solidify these insights. 5. Prioritize Strategic Development The desire for rapid progress is common among martial artists, but genuine improvement requires patience and strategic focus. Identifying and concentrating on fundamental skills or attributes relevant to your current challenges is more productive than seeking indiscriminate advancement. This targeted approach ensures meaningful progress and fosters a deeper understanding of martial arts principles. By embracing these strategies, martial artists can enhance their practice, deepen their understanding, and accelerate their journey towards mastery. Whether you're just beginning or have years of experience, these insights can transform your approach to martial arts, leading to profound personal and physical growth.

  • Chatri Sityodtong Talks Bruce Lee's Influence On ONE Championship

ONE Championship  Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong recently sat down with Shannon Lee for an episode of the Bruce Lee Podcast.   The pair discussed a myriad of topics, beginning with when the ONE co-founder discovered a passion for martial arts.   “I fell in love with Muay Thai when my father first took me to the iconic, the legendary, Lumpinee Stadium, which is the Mecca of Muay Thai, when I was nine years old. Kind of like how in America. You know, dads will take their kids to the ballpark or something, you know? Go watch a ball game. My father took me to Lumpinee Stadium, and I still remember to this day. It's one of the greatest memories I have of my father and I,” Sityodtong expressed. “The chanting, electric atmosphere, and the athletes moved with such beauty, and grace, and speed, and power. And I was enthralled. And from that moment on, it lit a fire in my heart that is burning as bright today as it was back then.”   Even with the embers glowing, Sityodtong had far from a linear journey to the top of the industry. He took a detour through Wall Street first, where he operated a hedge fund.   Despite finding financial success there, the Thai magnate was left unfulfilled.   “I still felt this deep sense of emptiness, and I went soul searching for that few weeks. I'm like, 'Is this going to be my life? Like, 'Am I just going to make a lot of money, buy a lot of material things and just keep on adding zeros to my bank account?' I mean it. It just – it felt very fruitless or senseless,” Sityodtong said.   “And so, as a lifelong martial artist, I thought naively if I returned back to Asia, it'll be very easy to unite 4.2 billion people that live here around Asia's greatest cultural treasure. I mean, in movies, we already had Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and Jackie Chan and the like. So, I thought, 'Well, what if I unleashed real life superheroes through the very best martial arts on the planet?”   Arguably the biggest icon in martial arts is Bruce Lee.     His presence is still felt throughout the world today, and Sityodtong noted his impact and the values of martial arts that connects him to ONE’s core principles as he spoke with Lee’s daughter, Shannon, on the podcast.   “Bruce Lee, yes he was a movie star, but at the core of who he was, he was a true martial artist. It is in his DNA. He broke rank in terms of the traditional martial arts, but he was on his constant progression of improvement and seeking knowledge and upgrading his skills,” he remarked.   “And yet martial arts through thousands of hours of training gives its practitioners integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, compassion. So many foundational values. I mean, that's why millions of parents send their kids to martial arts schools all over the world today.”   The ONE Chairman and CEO went on to discuss how everyone on the planet deals with the highs and lows of life. He commented on the company’s hashtag, “#WeAreONE,” that encompasses the connection between humans regardless of their background.   Sityodtong was impressed by Lee’s commitment to that ideal and how he was able to focus on the good in people.   “In many ways Bruce Lee was a child, you know. He let his inner child speak. Yes, he was an incredibly accomplished martial artist and actor and philosopher. But at the root of it is in many ways he had a childlike view of humanity in the world,” he explained.   “And he could have easily become a very skeptical, hateful man with the things that happened in Hollywood. But instead, he used that and focused on the good. He was not a bitter man. He's a philosophical person who just focused on love.”   Love is a word Sityodtong takes very seriously, as it is part of the ethos of ONE Championship.   Where other organizations may focus on vulgarity in feuds or promote those with public transgressions, the world’s largest martial arts organization instead shines a light on the values of the sports it promotes.   When Lee expressed how life is about learning how to suffer and make it part of one’s love, Sityodtong replied by describing one of his favorite quotes from her father and how it helps drive him forward to overcome any obstacle he encounters.   “That's why I said I love that quote ‘don't pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.’ That is in essence the same thing as ‘suffering is a path to our greatness.’ It's the same exact thing,” Sityodtong said.   “Because if you wish for an easy life, you never ever truly live. You'll just exist no different than a plant or a vegetable. You exist, but to live, to truly live, it means opening up your heart, living with love, and as a consequence, you can have your heart broken.”   “But that journey of living with love in your life is worth it. And in that suffering we will discover our greatness. In the same way again, Bruce is saying pray for the strength to endure a difficult life. A difficult life is not necessarily a bad one. A difficult life is a fulfilled, meaningful one. As long as we've chosen what to suffer for.”   To hear the complete interview, click here  for this episode of the Bruce Lee Podcast.

  • The Rise of Professional Jiu-Jitsu

Martial arts changed forever in November 1993 with the introduction of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. UFC 1 took place in Denver, Colorado and promised a night of no rules fighting that would prove which style of combat was the most effective. Royce Gracie went on to win that event, along with the UFC's second and fourth tournaments. After these events, jiu-jitsu began to gain popularity as a martial art. What was once confined mainly to Brazil was now beginning to spread on a global scale. Although it was a process that took many years, and that is still evolving today, the growth of jiu-jitsu globally cannot be denied. Many young practitioners are training the art full-time in hopes of making a living through competition. Up until recently, this was a very difficult task to pull off. Tournaments required entry fees and travel was expensive, forcing most competitors to have unrelated jobs off the mats. Nowadays, however, the tides are starting to change. Tournaments that offer cash prizes, super fights, and sponsorship deals are becoming much more commonplace. There are now consistent professional jiu-jitsu promotions that pay athletes for every one of their events. Fight to Win, Third Coast Grappling, EUG Promotions, BJJ Stars, Who's # 1, and ADCC are currently some of the top professional promotions in the sport. Professional Jiu-Jitsu Fight to Win Fight to Win's inaugural event took place in November 2015 in Denver, Colorado. The event featured nearly 20 matches with a stage and lighting that resembled a rock concert more closely than a jiu-jitsu event. CEO Seth Daniels is a lifelong martial artist and was promoting jiu-jitsu tournaments, MMA events, and concerts prior to starting his professional jiu-jitsu series. Appropriately dubbed "the biggest party in grappling," Fight to Win has been traveling the U.S. promoting events that feature a combination of the best professional and local talent. Fight to Win is approaching its 200th event and is showing no signs of slowing down. Third Coast Grappling Houston, Texas based Third Coast Grappling launched its first event on January 12, 2019. The event was headlined by Keenan Cornelius and Tex Johnson in a unique ruleset different from any other major promotion. Currently on its 8th event, Third Coast has now laid out plans to promote events outside of its native Houston. With names such as Gordon Ryan, Nicholas Meregali, Craig Jones, Marcio Andre, Gianni Grippo, and Edwin Najmi having competed on the Third Coast stage, you can expect to see some of the sports best competing on future events. Third Coast is set to bring some of the most exciting professional jiu-jitsu events across the U.S. in 2022. EUG Promotions EUG Promotions is based out of Las Vegas, Nevada and strives to put on the best professional event focused on the lighter weight classes. In its inaugural show, Andy Murasaki took out some of the best 160 lb. grapplers in the world to win $10k in his black belt debut. Evolve Ur Game put on another event in June 2021 featuring some of the best 170lb. grapplers in the world, where Johnatha Alves of the Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy brought home the championship belt and $10k. In addition to the professional tournaments with money on the line, EUG has also done a great job of giving the future stars of the sport a spot on the big stage in prelim matches. Their next event goes down on Saturday October 23rd live from the Las Vegas Harley Davidson Center. BJJ Stars While there have been plenty of professional promotions come out of jiu-jitsu's home in Brazil, BJJ Stars has been one of the most consistent in the past 2 years. So far the promotion has held 6 events featuring athletes such as Beatriz Mesquita, Felipe Pena, Leandro Lo, Bianca Basilio, Gutemberg Pereira, Isaque Bahiense, and Nicholas Meregali. From tournaments to super fights, BJJ Stars has consistently provided some of the best professional events featuring Brazil's top grapplers. Their next event will be Saturday November 6th, and will feature Gilbert Burns and Roberto Jimenez, among others. Who’s #1 The inaugural Who's #1 event was a gi event that provided awesome match ups and served as a way to help decide which grapplers should be ranked highest in their respective weight classes. Every subsequent event has been no-gi, and the promotion even held its first tournament recently. Since its early events, Who's #1 has solidified itself as one of the top no-gi super fight shows in the world. In addition to bringing in the best no-gi athletes, they are also paying great purses. Their most recent tournament paid out $30k to each of their five division winners. The next WNO event will take place on Wednesday October 20th, live on Flograppling. ADCC The ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship has long been considered the premier professional submission grappling event in the world. The event started in 1998 in Abu Dhabi and eventually moved to various countries across the globe. Some of the biggest names in the jiu-jitsu world built their reputations at ADCC. Marcelo Garcia, Roger Gracie, Hannette Staack, Kyra Gracie, Rubens "Cobrinha" Charles, and Gabi Garcia all won multiple titles and cemented their names in submission grappling history at ADCC. The event is now organized by Mo Jassim and it has become even more organized and prestigious. ADCC's September 2022 event will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada and is sure to be the biggest and best yet. Although jiu-jitsu is still a relatively young martial art, it is no doubt one of the fastest growing in the world. The increase in popularity has led to more professional events and thus, more professional competitors. As these events are held more frequently and competitors receive bigger paydays, expect to see more major players in the professional event scene for years to come.
