Martial Arts Tournament Throwback: Memory in Time

Updated: Jul 25

Two "Black Belt Magazine" covers featured; one with a woman in a hat, the other with a man in a red gi. Spring '25 issue promotion.

Do you know his name....do you remember his legacy? Share a memory if you do!

He was one of the most respected American Taekwondo practitioners of the 1960s and ’70s, admired even by peers like the late Bruce Lee. He was the only athlete selected for both the first and second U.S. National Teams (1973, 1975).

A standout competitor, he won multiple major martial arts tournaments—including Richard Chun’s Universal Open—and earned a bronze medal at the 1973 World Taekwondo Championships in Seoul.

In 2007, he was inducted into the inaugural Official Taekwondo Hall of Fame.

Who is he?
