The Woman Behind the Warrior: How Shadow Singha Mawynn's Mother Forged a Champion from Nothing

There was a time when Thai star Shadow Singha Mawynn's mother couldn't afford a 50-cent tube of skin cream for her son. But now, those days of struggling seem to be finally over.

At Lumpinee Stadium on September 5, she watched him earn a US$50,000 performance bonus

in a single night — 100,000 times what that simple comfort once cost.

As Shadow landed the spinning backfist that knocked out #2-ranked featherweight Muay Thai

contender Bampara Kouyate at ONE Fight Night 35, the woman who had worked on

construction sites and foraged in forests to keep food on their table witnessed the moment when

all her sacrifices finally transformed into triumph.

The journey to that triumph began in circumstances that would have broken lesser spirits.

Shadow's childhood was defined not by privilege or comfort, but by the unshakeable love of a

mother who refused to let poverty define her son's destiny.

"I grew up with my mother and aunt. Our family was not well-off, and I was never spoiled by

anyone,” Shadow reflected. “It was as if I was trained to be self-reliant from a young age.

However, my mother always gave me love,"

While other children might have had toys or treats, Shadow had something more valuable — a

living example of what determination looks like. His mother's work ethic became his first and

most important lesson in perseverance.

"My mother did everything to earn income, whether it was foraging in the forest or working on a

construction site," he recalled, painting a picture of a woman who knew no job was beneath her

when it came to providing for her family.

The depth of their struggle becomes clear in the smallest details — the luxuries other families

took for granted were impossible dreams for them. Shadow's memories are etched with the pain

of wanting basic necessities and knowing they were out of reach.

"She was willing to do anything to support our family. I didn't even dare to dream because of our

constrained social and economic circumstances, so much so that we couldn't even afford a 15-

baht (US$0.50) sachet of cream for dry skin in winter," Shadow shared, highlighting just how far

they've traveled.

From those humble beginnings, Shadow began carving his path in Muay Thai. His ONE

Championship journey didn't begin with fanfare — he lost his debut in early 2024, a setback that

might have derailed someone with less resilience.

But Shadow wasn't just fighting for himself. Every training session, every fight, every moment of

pain in the gym carried the weight of his mother's sacrifices. That motivation fueled an incredible

comeback that saw him claim five straight victories over the likes of former title challenger

Jimmy Vienot and living legend Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong, earning not just wins but respect,

recognition, and ultimately a life-changing $100,000 contract with ONE Championship.

The culmination came at ONE Fight Night 35, where Shadow faced his toughest test yet against

the highly regarded Bampara Kouyate. In a moment that seemed crafted by destiny, Shadow

landed a perfectly timed spinning backfist that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas and

caused the Lumpinee Stadium crowd to break into chaos.

As the referee waved off the fight and Shadow was declared the winner, the emotion

overwhelmed him. This wasn't just a victory. It was vindication for every hungry night, every

sacrifice, every moment his mother chose to work rather than rest so her son could pursue his

dreams.

"I just want her to live comfortably and have a happy life. Everything [that I do] is for my mom. I

was not the strongest, but I knew I was raised by the strongest person ever, my mom," Shadow

said during his post-fight interview, his voice carrying the weight of 25 years of gratitude.

With his mother standing beside him in the center of the ring, Shadow's US$50,000 bonus

represented more than prize money — it was freedom from the constraints that had defined

their lives and must have felt like witnessing a miracle.

But for Shadow, there's no time to rest on this life-changing triumph.

The fighter who learned self-reliance from childhood will face China's Liu Mengyang in a

featherweight kickboxing match at ONE Friday Fights 126 on September 26, stepping in for the

injured ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Champion Tawanchai PK Saenchai.
