Cover Story Throwback: AlGene Caraulia

The July 1976 cover of Karate Illustrated featured Master AlGene Caraulia — devoted martial artist, champion, and promoter.


Caraulia trained under Kajukenbo founder Adriano Emperado, Tony Ramos, and judo instructor Gene Wyka.


In 1963, he won the inaugural World Karate Championship. By 1970, he brought his art to Cleveland, Ohio, founding the Karate Institute, later known as the Karate Institute of America.


A member of the United States Karate Association, he earned a 4th-degree black belt and joined its elite Trias International group.
