The July 1976 cover of Black Belt magazine featured Kenny Knudson, widely known as the "Midwest Karate King."
A legendary martial artist from Chicago, Knudson made the bold decision to leave his career as a toolmaker to pursue his passion for martial arts full time. He went on to found Olympic Karate Studios, rapidly expanding to open ten locations throughout the Chicago area.
In 1974, he sold the successful chain and pivoted to the hospitality industry, where he established a thriving hotel business. A 5th-degree black belt and beloved figure in the martial arts community, Knudson’s influence extended far beyond the dojo.
Tragically, his life was cut short at age 61 in a plane crash.
His legacy as both a fighting icon and entrepreneurial force continues to inspire generations.
