Mixed martial arts (MMA) continues to gain momentum in Mexico, highlighted by the consistent and notable presence of Gabriel Benitez in the UFC. A native of Tijuana, Benitez has marked a decade in the UFC, showcasing his resilience and passion for the sport.
As he prepares for UFC Vegas 91, Gabriel Benitez, affectionately known as "Moggly," is eager to step into the octagon for his 15th fight under the UFC banner. "I feel super proud about this journey. It's not only my 15th fight, but also 10 continuous years in the UFC—no cuts, nothing," he shared with UFC.com.
Benitez's journey to the UFC is as remarkable as his tenure. Before joining the UFC, he accumulated a 16-4 professional record. His potential was recognized during the first season of The Ultimate Fighter Latin America, where he competed under Team Velasquez. Although he didn't win, losing in the featherweight semifinals to Leonardo Morales, his performance secured him a place in the UFC. He debuted at UFC 180, winning by third-round submission against Humberto Brown, followed by a unanimous decision over Clay Collard at UFC 188.
Over the years, Benitez has navigated through highs and lows in both the featherweight and lightweight divisions. He has always aimed to evolve with each fight, learning and adapting his style.
"In every fight, I tried to evolve something, and I feel that spirit will be part of this fight," he said.
Now preparing for his 36th professional MMA fight, Benitez faces Chinese prospect Maheshate, a younger and less experienced fighter. Despite the age and experience gap, Benitez is undeterred. "He's new in the company, so he has the hunger for the win. But I'm ready for everything. This will be a fun match to watch," he stated confidently.
Benitez's flexibility in fighting in both the featherweight and lightweight divisions has made him a versatile choice for matchmakers. Although he acknowledges that 155 pounds might be healthier for him, he remains open to opportunities at 145 pounds as well.
The upcoming fight against Maheshate promises to be exciting, potentially full of stand-up combat, though Benitez is prepared for any surprises. "All the fighters say they are strikers, but when they fight me, they go to wrestle. So maybe this is not the exception," he speculated.
Beyond this fight, Benitez has his sights set on a bigger goal—a spot on the fight card at the Las Vegas Sphere on Mexican Independence Day, a fitting stage for such a seasoned fighter looking to continue his impressive run in the UFC.
