Jonathan Haggerty began 2024 as a two-sport world champion, but Superlek Kiatmoo9 turned that dream into a nightmare at ONE 168: Denver. The fight ended in jaw-dropping fashion, with a knockout in under a minute, leaving fans stunned and Haggerty searching for answers.
Despite the setback, the Brit is reflecting on a whirlwind year that saw him face adversity, personal loss, and a renewed hunger for greatness. His thrilling year kicked off in February with an unforgettable war against Brazilian Felipe Lobo.
“It was a tough fight. It wasn’t what we planned, but it was a war. The fans loved it, and that’s what matters. It’s a win-win,” Haggerty told ONE Championship.
The bout was deeply personal for Haggerty, who fought just weeks after the passing of his uncle. “Getting back off the ropes after being knocked down in round one, I knew I’d come back and get the victory. I felt his presence, like Rocky hearing Mickey. I heard my uncle telling me to get up, fight on, and get to work,” he shared.
But the crushing defeat to Superlek in Denver was a bitter pill to swallow. Haggerty had poured everything into his preparation, spending weeks acclimating in Colorado to ensure he was at his best. “I felt amazing in the lead-up. I spent a lot of time, effort, and money to get everything perfect. The most gutting part is that after 13 weeks of work, I didn’t get to show any of it,” Haggerty lamented.
Still, “The General” remains undeterred. His mantra? “We don’t lose; we learn.”
Looking ahead, Haggerty is laser-focused on defending his ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title at ONE 171: Qatar against Weui Rui. But his ambitions for 2025 are even grander—he’s aiming to reclaim Muay Thai gold and make history as the first-ever two-time, two-sport ONE World Champion.
“My goal in 2025 is to become double-champ again. I don’t think there’s ever been a two-time, two-sport ONE World Champion, and I want to set that record. I’m here to take all the belts. It’s why I signed with ONE,” Haggerty declared.
Beyond the ring, Haggerty is also looking to build his legacy outside of fighting. He plans to open the Haggerty Academy to inspire the next generation of martial artists and is preparing for a more personal milestone: starting a family.
“I’m looking to start a family myself, if I’m honest. If it happens, I’ll be buzzing. I’m opening my own gym after this fight to work on the next generation, both in the gym and at home,” Haggerty revealed.
With his sights set on reclaiming his throne and creating a lasting impact both in and out of the ring, Jonathan Haggerty is determined to turn 2025 into the year of redemption.
